{"id":174490,"date":"2026-02-21T17:42:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-21T17:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/174490\/"},"modified":"2026-02-21T17:42:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T17:42:20","slug":"brett-maher-ex-kicker-named-nebraska-special-teams-coach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/174490\/","title":{"rendered":"Brett Maher, ex-kicker, named Nebraska special teams coach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher has been announced as special teams coordinator for the Nebraska Cornhuskers heading into the 2026 college football season.<\/p>\n<p>Maher has been coaching at Nebraska since 2024 when he joined as an assistant special teams coach.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboys fans will remember Maher, who was the team\u2019s kicker for three of his five NFL seasons.<\/p>\n<p>Maher\u2019s Cowboys tenure ended after his best season in 2022, when he made 29 of 32 field goals but came down with a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/sports\/spt-columns-blogs\/mac-engel\/article271261117.html\">case of the yips<\/a> when set an NFL record by missing his <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/sports\/nfl\/dallas-cowboys\/article271262347.html\">first four extra point attempts<\/a> in the team\u2019s 31-14 playoff victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Jan. 16, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Maher ended his career with the NFL record for the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/27891798\/cowboys-brett-maher-first-kicker-make-three-60-yard-fgs\">most 60-yard field goals<\/a>, a mark that would be surpassed by current <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/sports\/nfl\/dallas-cowboys\/article312567188.html\">Cowboys All-Pro kicker Brandon Aubrey.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Maher, a Nebraska native, is no stranger to the Cornhuskers and played his college football in Lincoln, where he was a two-time Big Ten kicker of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The former pro kicker will try and help Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule get the formerly great program back to prominence.<\/p>\n<p>  Game schedule dates, times, locations              Feb. 3 Boston 110, Mavericks 100      Feb. 5 San Antonio 135, Mavericks 123      Feb. 7 San Antonio 138, Mavericks 125      Feb. 10 Phoenix 120, Mavericks 111      Feb. 12 L.A.
