(Missouri State Highway Patrol via AP)<\/p>\n<p> Missouri State Highway Patrol\/via AP<\/p>\n<p>Investigators now believe Brashers\u2019 crimes spanned at least 14 years and several states, including:<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>An attempted sexual assault in Florida 1985, believe to be his earliest offense<br \/>\nA sexual assault and killing in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1990, about 18 months before the Austin murders<br \/>\nA burglary and sexual assault in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1997<br \/>\nA sexual assault and murder in\u00a0Portageville, Missouri. in 1998<br \/>\nAn attempted home invasion and assault in\u00a0Dyersburg, Tenn. in 1998<br \/>\nA sexual assault and murder in Lexington,\u00a0Kentrucky in 1998 \u2014 a case that later proved pivotal in linking him to the yogurt shop murders.<\/p>\n<p>Although Brashers served two stints in prison in the 1980s and 1990s, Jackson said the man, who died by suicide in 1999, deployed a range of tactics to evade law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>According to Jackson, the man changed his name, had multiple aliases and birth certificates, traveled in multiple states and \u201crarely\u201d committed crimes where he lived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>At one point, Jackson said,\u00a0Brashers even wrote an obituary for himself that he had published in several newspapers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was clever,\u201d Jackson told the court Thursday. \u201cHe was able to evade justice for many years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brashers wasn\u2019t on investigators\u2019 radar until last year<\/p>\n<p>Despite thousands of leads over 34 years \u2014 including hundreds of tips, dozens of false confessions and extensive DNA testing \u2014 Brashers\u2019 name never surfaced during the original investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p class=\"MM_onlineOnly\" title=\"CCI Online Only\">Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/local\/article\/austin-yogurt-shop-murders-timeline-cold-case-21069702.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Austin yogurt shop murders: A timeline of the long road from cold case to a DNA match<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRobert Eugene Brashers was never in the yogurt shop case files,\u201d Jackson said from the witness stand Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Given the steps investigators now believe he took to conceal his identity and movements, his absence from the file underscores how effectively he avoided scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>The right man for the job<\/p>\n<p>After Thursday\u2019s hearing, Dennis Farris \u2014 an officer who worked the 1991 crime scene and now serves as president of the Austin Police Retired Officers Association \u2014 described Detective Jackson as the \u201cperfect\u201d detective to lead the cold case review.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Jackson\u2019s path to\u00a0homicide investigator was unconventional. He holds a master\u2019s degree in anthropology and joined the Travis County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office in 2005 as a forensic investigator.
