CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 The historic Corpus Christi Cathedral has been a symbol of faith and community since the 1940s and is getting a long-awaited restoration.<\/p>\n
The cathedral\u2019s roots trace back to 1853 with the founding of Saint Patrick\u2019s Parish. But the current structure, standing in the heart of the city since the early 1940s, hasn\u2019t seen a major makeover in more than four decades.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s changing with new renovations, tagged with a hefty price of $13.6 million. At least $474,283 of those funds were recently approved by the City of Corpus Christi\u2019s Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) #3. That particular amount of money from TIRZ #3 will be put directed back into the neighborhood through the city’s Streetscape and Safety Improvement Program, designed to enhance safety, infrastructure, and area beautification.<\/p>\n
Other avenues of funding were utilized to pay for the remainder of the project. <\/p>\n
Bishop Michael Mulvey of the Diocese of Corpus Christi said the work will breathe new life into the cathedral while maintaining its historic identity.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a great gift to the Diocese of Corpus Christi and to the people of the city,\u201d Mulvey said. \u201cI wanted to bring in something that would speak to all of us, the beauty of God, the beauty of prayer, the beauty of coming together, while also looking to the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
The renovations began in 2023 with $750,000 in updates to the Emmanuel Chapel. <\/p>\n
Construction has since expanded to $1.4 million in interior remodeling, which includes new flooring, accessibility improvements, lighting and sound upgrades, and the addition of a new shrine dedicated to All Saints.<\/p>\n
Mulvey said some of the changes were prompted by structural wear and ongoing issues with acoustics and infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were cracks in the wall that we discovered,\u201d Mulvey said. \u201cPeople, for years, have said \u2018we can\u2019t hear you.\u2019 It\u2019s the beauty of the space, but the infrastructure needed attention.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another $5 million will go toward building a new grand hall for community gatherings and events. The exterior will also receive significant attention, including fa\u00e7ade cleaning, fencing, security cameras, and landscaping improvements.<\/p>\n
Interior renovations are expected to be completed by the end of 2025, with the full project scheduled for completion by 2028.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is about preserving the cathedral\u2019s past while preparing it for generations to come,\u201d Mulvey added.<\/p>\n
