During a week when we watched what we thought was a community event suddenly go private, Saturday delivered a welcome reminder that there are still plenty of good people doing good things.<\/p>\n

Big Wick’s 2nd Annual Carne Guisada Cookoff took over the Kitalou Gin, just 10\u201312 minutes from central Lubbock<\/a>. Carne guisada may feel like a niche item nationally, but around here it\u2019s a staple \u2014 the same way poutine is huge in some regions and unknown in others. The renovated gin made a perfect venue, with one giant room for vendors and another big enough to hold the cooks, patrons, and live music setup.<\/p>\n

A Small Cookoff With a Huge Heart<\/p>\n

Seventeen competitors \u2014 a mix of restaurants and individuals \u2014 showed up not just to win, but to help raise money for Idalou Meals On Wheels. The original $5,000 goal didn\u2019t just get met; it got crushed, with the final total topping $7,200.<\/p>\n

A big thanks goes out to Raider Red Meats<\/a> for donating the competition beef, Villa’s Tortillas<\/a> for supplying the tortillas, Evie Mae\u2019s<\/a> for providing sausages, and Chickie\u2019s Tastie Treats<\/a> for donating cupcakes that boosted the fundraiser even more.<\/p>\n

Honestly, we need more of this \u2014 more community gatherings where we celebrate what we share and enjoy great food side by side. I strongly encourage you to make plans for the 3rd annual event next year. It\u2019s fun, it\u2019s family, and it feels like Texas.<\/p>\n
