{"id":176907,"date":"2026-02-23T20:17:06","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T20:17:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/176907\/"},"modified":"2026-02-23T20:17:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T20:17:06","slug":"this-grocery-chain-costs-dallas-shoppers-the-most-per-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/176907\/","title":{"rendered":"This grocery chain costs Dallas shoppers the most, per study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In Dallas-Fort Worth, Whole Foods lives up to its \u201cWhole Paycheck\u201d reputation for selling pricey groceries.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/money\/prices-price-comparison\/most-and-least-expensive-supermarkets-a3157951568\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> conducted by market research company Strategic Resource Group for Consumer Reports found Austin-based Whole Foods is the most expensive grocery chain in DFW compared with Walmart as a baseline. The study examined prices for a \u201cbasket\u201d of comparable packaged goods, produce, and meat.<\/p>\n<p>At DFW Whole Foods stores, groceries were 48 percent more expensive than comparable groceries purchased at Walmart, the study showed. Whole Foods operates 15 stores in DFW.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Whole Foods told Consumer Reports that the study didn\u2019t account for other factors that may be important to shoppers, including ingredient standards and product sourcing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the last 18 months, Whole Foods Market has reduced prices on 25 percent of items in our stores, including private-label items, without compromising our industry-leading quality standards,\u201d a Whole Foods spokesperson said. \u201c[Amazon] Prime members who shop at Whole Foods Market have access to a number of benefits year-round, including deep discounts on select popular products each week and an additional 10 percent off hundreds of in-store sale items.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In DFW, the least expensive grocer was Costco, whose prices were 18 percent below those at Walmart. Prices at San Antonio-based H-E-B were just 0.2 percent below Walmart\u2019s prices.<\/p>\n<p>Costco operates 16 stores in DFW, Walmart operated about 140 in North Texas as of last September, and H-E-B has 11 DFW stores and <a href=\"https:\/\/dallas.culturemap.com\/news\/restaurants-bars\/heb-mid-cities-hiring-fair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">plans to open<\/a> at least six more.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the full list of DFW grocers included in the study, with the percentages indicating a grocer\u2019s prices compared with Walmart\u2019s prices.<\/p>\n<p>Costco, -18 percent (No. 6 among grocers ranked by the 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/theacsi.org\/industries\/retail\/supermarkets\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">American Customer Satisfaction Index<\/a>)Aldi, -5 percentWinCo Foods, -2.3 percentH-E-B, -0.2 percent (ranked No. 3 by the American Customer Satisfaction Index)Target, +9 percentKroger, +14.7 percentFiesta, +21.7 percentAlbertsons, +23.4 percentTom Thumb, +25.4 percentEl Rancho, +30.1 percentTrader Joe\u2019s, +33 percent (ranked No. 1 by the American Customer Satisfaction Index)Whole Foods, +48 percent (ranked No. 7 by the American Customer Satisfaction Index)<\/p>\n<p>The study reviewed grocery prices in six U.S. metro areas. In addition to DFW, they were Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles\/Southern California, and Virginia Beach, Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>A few notes about the study:<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t account for the cost of annual memberships at places like Costco.Many of the grocery items that the study compared were national brands, meaning grocers\u2019 private-label goods weren\u2019t given full weight.Not all \u201cbaskets\u201d contained the same number of items.
