The film features local artists Black Mercy, Chief and TheDoomsDayDevice, (Expletive) Money and Urban Heat.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Director Ryan Darbonne, a graduate film production student at UT Austin, has long explored stories focused on Black youth subcultures and what he describes as \u201cBlack punk.\u201d Typically a narrative filmmaker, this marks Darbonne\u2019s first documentary feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Local filmmaker Ryan Darbonne's documentary on Austin's Black punk music scene, &quot;Shut The (Expletive) Up When We Speak,&quot; is premiering at SXSW 2026.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:16 \/ 9\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Local filmmaker Ryan Darbonne&#8217;s documentary on Austin&#8217;s Black punk music scene, &#8220;Shut The (Expletive) Up When We Speak,&#8221; is premiering at SXSW 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Provided by Ryan Darbonne<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted it to feel grungy \u2014 kind of messy and ugly \u2014 so we (mostly) shot it on a camera from 2001,\u201d Darbonne said. \u201cThe very nature of being Black, or a person of color, in America is punk in itself. By the very nature of me pointing a camera at five Black men, I\u2019m making a statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Darbonne made the film for $80 and had no expectation that it would be selected to premiere at one of the world\u2019s most prestigious film festivals. Christgau made his biggest impact as a writer and editor at The Village Voice, and also contributed to Rolling Stone, Creem and other publications.
