Not long ago I picked up a friend from the airport, and the first thing out of his mouth was, \u201cAh\u2026 Lubbock still smells like cowsh@t.\u201d Now, he\u2019s a Texas Tech graduate, so don\u2019t think too ill of him, but it did make me pause. My response was, \u201cDoes Lubbock<\/a> really smell like cowsh@t?\u201d Honestly, I can\u2019t smell it \u2014 if I ever could. Sure, I\u2019ve noticed the occasional \u201cextra fragrant\u201d day, but I never realized people thought we had a daily eau de feedlot.<\/p>\n How Much of Lubbock\u2019s \u201cSmell\u201d Came From the Feedlot?<\/p>\n Apparently, a lot of that odor was\u00a0blamed\u00a0on\u00a0Lubbock Feeders, a feedlot that operated here for more than 70 years. Regardless of the smell, this business will truly be missed. Its closure will ripple through the local economy \u2014 feed suppliers, veterinarians, transport, and countless supporting jobs rely on operations like this. Losing it means losing a piece of Lubbock history and a chunk of economic activity.<\/p>\n So\u2026 What Will Lubbock Smell Like Now?<\/p>\n I halfway expected the cheese plant to make its presence known, but so far\u2026 nothing. My best guess? You\u2019re going to get two scents: 95% dust, and the other 5% mold and mildew from the occasional soaking rain or deep snow we get.<\/p>\n
