Rumors have swirled in Houston: is there a serial killer using the bayous as a dumping ground?<\/p>\n
The theory comes from a chilling statistic \u2013 the number of bodies found in the water over time. To many, that pattern looks like the work of one person.<\/p>\n
But crime experts say the evidence doesn\u2019t support that.<\/p>\n
Andy Kahan, director of victim services and advocacy at Crime Stoppers of Houston<\/a>, is a serial killer expert. He says what we know about serial killers doesn\u2019t match what\u2019s happening in the bayous.<\/p>\n Typical serial killer victim patterns <\/p>\n -Pick certain gender<\/p>\n \u201cIf you go back in Houston through crime history, we\u2019ve only had a few serial killers. Serial killers, for the most part, are gender specific. Very rarely do serial killers kill both male and female victims. <\/p>\n -Pick certain ages<\/p>\n \u201cThey single out a particular victim. They usually stick to a specific age range.\u201d<\/p>\n The bodies found in Houston\u2019s bayous don\u2019t fit that narrow profile.<\/p>\n \u201cIn the body count that we sadly have in the bayous, ages are from teenagers all the way up to senior citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n -Don\u2019t typically use drowning<\/p>\n Kahn also points to the suspected cause of many of these deaths: drowning.<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s never been a serial killer that has basically used drowning as a method to kill their victims. Drowning is hard. It\u2019s not easy. It\u2019s just frankly impossible to even perceive.\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s why Kahn is clear: based on what investigators know right now, the \u201cBodies in the Bayou\u201d rumor does not point to a single serial killer stalking Houston.<\/p>\n Families are desperate for answers.
