{"id":17866,"date":"2025-10-23T18:27:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T18:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/17866\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T18:27:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T18:27:11","slug":"port-houston-reports-emissions-progress-as-cargo-volumes-climb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/17866\/","title":{"rendered":"Port Houston reports emissions progress as cargo volumes climb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Port Houston\u2019s initiatives to reduce emissions have shown some positive results, according to new data from the Port of Houston Authority.<\/p>\n<p>Pulling from the Goods Movement Emissions Inventory (<a href=\"https:\/\/porthouston.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/FINAL-Port-Houston-2023-GMEI-Report-17-Sept-25.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">GMEI<\/a>) report, which tracks port-related air emissions, Port Houston cited several improvements compared to the most recent report from 2019. <\/p>\n<p>The port has seen total tonnage and container volumes increase by 16 percent and 28 percent, respectively, since 2019. However, greenhouse gas emissions have increased at a slower rate, growing only by 10 percent during the same time period, according to the data. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, emissions of nitrogen oxide fell by 7 percent, and emissions of particulate matter fell by 4 percent, despite adding 280 more pieces of cargo handling equipment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese results show that our emission-reduction efforts are working, and we are moving in the right direction,\u201d Chairman Ric Campo said in a news release.<\/p>\n<p>The Port Commission also recently approved items related to the $3 million U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Clean Ports Program (CPP) grant, which it <a href=\"https:\/\/houston.innovationmap.com\/port-houston-epa-grant-2669624659.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">received last year<\/a>.
