Renovated station adds new ambulance, technology upgrades and wellness-focused design \n<\/p>\n
Plano Fire-Rescue celebrated the grand reopening of Fire Station 5 on Oct. 22, marking the completion of a $12 million renovation and expansion funded by the city\u2019s 2021 Bond Referendum.<\/p>\n
Located at 5115 W. Park Blvd., the station first opened in 1983 and has served Plano residents for more than four decades. The newly upgraded facility nearly doubles its size, from 7,200 to 14,000 square feet, reflecting the city\u2019s continued investment in public safety and growth.<\/p>\n
Modern Design For A Growing City<\/p>\n
The expanded station now accommodates more emergency vehicles and specialized equipment, including a new ambulance and a hazardous materials truck and trailer. The design also introduces Plano\u2019s first private bedrooms for firefighters, along with an upgraded kitchen, a wellness-oriented workout area and a storm shelter.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you see call volume increasing all the time, you see them getting up more frequently,\u201d said Fire Chief Chris Biggerstaff during the opening<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s a big deal when you have the ability to rest longer during long shifts.\u201d<\/p>\n New alert technology ensures only the firefighters needed for a specific call are woken up, allowing others to rest \u2014 an upgrade Chief Biggerstaff described as vital for performance and well-being.<\/p>\n Supporting Firefighters\u2019 Health And Readiness<\/p>\n From the larger living quarters to the custom-built dining table crafted by the crew themselves, every element of the new space was designed with firefighter wellness in mind.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is no question at any time whether we are supported, whether there\u2019s a commitment to public safety,\u201d said Biggerstaff. \u201cAnd you can look at this facility here today and tell that that\u2019s true.\u201d<\/p>\n The station also includes expanded parking for staff and visitors, making it easier for residents to engage with their local fire department.<\/p>\n A Legacy Of Service<\/p>\n Since its original opening in 1983, Fire Station 5 has remained a cornerstone of Plano Fire-Rescue\u2019s service network.
