{"id":180046,"date":"2026-02-25T19:27:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-25T19:27:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/180046\/"},"modified":"2026-02-25T19:27:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T19:27:12","slug":"in-8-candidate-slugfest-two-da-candidates-have-all-the-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/180046\/","title":{"rendered":"In 8-candidate slugfest, two DA candidates have all the money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a race with no clear frontrunner, two Democrats running for Bexar County District Attorney have used personal money to outspend the rest of the field.<\/p>\n<p>Campaign finance reports covering Jan. 23 through Feb. 22 were due Monday. <\/p>\n<p>They indicated no candidate had raised more than about $25,000 in that span, but <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3845baa9e7672a9eb5e9569d4&amp;id=ba8d4f45fe&amp;e=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Luz Elena Chapa<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02232026luzelenachapa.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02232026luzelenachapa.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">able to spend $245,000<\/a> on advertising and block-walking, thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce01152026luzelenachapa.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce01152026luzelenachapa.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a $100,000 personal loan<\/a> early on in the race and a $100,000 check from her ex-husband, attorney Miguel Chapa, back in December.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-debate-march-3-primary-election\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-debate-march-3-primary-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Chapa has been under attack<\/a> from a field of candidates who say her lack of prosecutorial experience makes her dangerously unqualified to be the next district attorney. <\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s never been a prosecutor, while the others have spent years working in the DA\u2019s office \u2014 and some still manage departments there today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/who-is-running-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/who-is-running-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Get smart quickly on the eight Democrats running for District Attorney<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But so far few candidates are raising enough money to get their messages out ahead of the March 3 primary.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/jane-davis-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jane Davis<\/a>, chief of the Juvenile Section of the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s Office, came the closest to Chapa after loaning her own campaign a total of $266,000, according to the most recent reports. Credit: Salgu Wissmath for the San Antonio Report<\/p>\n<p>The next-biggest spender was <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/angelica-meli-carrion-powers-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Angelica \u201cMeli\u201d Carri\u00f3n Powers<\/a>, who oversees the Family Violence Division at the District Attorney\u2019s Office. She\u2019s also used personal funds for the race, raising about $500 between Jan. 23 through Feb. 22 and spending <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02232026angelicacarrionpowers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">about $65,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The eight-way Democratic primary is likely to come down to a May 26 runoff, with the winner emerging as the odds-on favorite to carry the blue county in November.<\/p>\n<p>Yet few political insiders have a clear idea of who those two final Democratic candidates might be.<\/p>\n<p>Past district attorney races have been <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-tv-ads\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/bexar-county-district-attorney-tv-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">rocked by big PAC money<\/a>, which so far has yet to come in this race.<\/p>\n<p>The progressive bail reform group <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-organizing-project-wades-into-bexar-district-attorney-race\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/texas-organizing-project-wades-into-bexar-district-attorney-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Texas Organizing Project is backing Jim Bethke<\/a> in the Democratic primary, but had only spent about $32,000 on mailers his behalf as of Feb. 22, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/cne02232026jimbethke.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/cne02232026jimbethke.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">his campaign finance report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The San Antonio Police Officers Association\u2019s PAC endorsed Chapa and spent about $50,000 on her behalf, according to spokesman for the group.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/opinion\/commentary\/article\/chapa-response-editorial-prosecutor-experience-21906770.php\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.expressnews.com\/opinion\/commentary\/article\/chapa-response-editorial-prosecutor-experience-21906770.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">a recent op-ed<\/a>, Chapa held that support up as evidence the community has confidence she can do the job.<\/p>\n<p>Fundraising toplines<\/p>\n<p>Former Fourth Court of Appeals Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.us5.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3845baa9e7672a9eb5e9569d4&amp;id=ba8d4f45fe&amp;e=0e4ffa370a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Luz Elena Chapa<\/a> (D) <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02232026luzelenachapa.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raised $26,000<\/a>, spent $245,000 and reported $50,000 on hand. She received about $50,000 in help from the police union\u2019s PAC.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/jane-davis-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Jane Davis<\/a>, chief of the Juvenile Section of the Bexar County District Attorney\u2019s Office, loaned her campaign another $160,000, bringing her total investment up to $266,000. She <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/cne02232026janedavis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported $1,000 raised<\/a>, $90,000 spent and $168,000 on hand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/angelica-meli-carrion-powers-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Angelica \u201cMeli\u201d Carri\u00f3n Powers<\/a>, who oversees the Family Violence Division at the District Attorney\u2019s Office, raised $500 and <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02232026angelicacarrionpowers.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">spent about $65,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/social-media-personality-shannon-locke-bexar-county-district-attorney-da-race\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Shannon Locke<\/a>, a defense attorney, raised $13,400, spent $23,000 and reported $1,000 on hand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/oscar-salinas-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Oscar Salinas<\/a>, a prosecutor in the DA\u2019s office,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02232026oscarrsalinas.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02232026oscarrsalinas.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">raised about $500<\/a> and spent $3,500 and reported $365 on hand.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/meredith-chacon-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Meredith Chacon<\/a>, a defense attorney and former prosecutor, raised $26,000 and spent $12,500, and <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02232026meredithchacon.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02232026meredithchacon.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported $7,000 on hand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/veronica-legarreta-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Veronica Legarreta<\/a>, a defense attorney, raised $6,500, spent $9,500 and <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/ce02262026veronicalegarreta.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported $13,600 on hand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sanantonioreport.org\/profile\/james-bethke-2026-candidate-for-bexar-county-district-attorney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">James Bethke<\/a>, executive director of the Managed Assigned Counsel, raised $18,500, spent $10,000, and <a href=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/cne02232026jimbethke.pdf\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/edocs.bexar.org\/elections\/cne02232026jimbethke.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">reported $13,000 on hand<\/a>.
