{"id":180592,"date":"2026-02-26T02:53:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T02:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/180592\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T02:53:07","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T02:53:07","slug":"president-trump-cited-a-houston-womans-home-ownership-crisis-in-state-of-the-union-address-heres-what-data-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/180592\/","title":{"rendered":"President Trump cited a Houston woman\u2019s home ownership crisis in State of the Union address; here\u2019s what data says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Homeownership has long been described as the cornerstone of the American Dream, and it became a national talking point during President Donald Trump\u2019s State of the Union address.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">President Trump highlighted a Houston mother who said she lost 20 bids on homes to large investment firms paying cash.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cShe placed bids on 20 homes and lost all of those bids to gigantic investment firms that bypassed inspection, paid all cash and turned those houses into rentals, stealing away her American dream,\u201d the President said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He announced he signed an executive order banning large Wall Street investment firms from buying thousands of single-family homes and is now urging Congress to make the ban permanent.<\/p>\n<p>But how much of Harris County\u2019s housing market is actually controlled by large corporate investors?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to data from the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, about nine major national investment firms own roughly 11,000 single-family homes in Harris County approximately 1% of the county\u2019s nearly one million single-family properties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cSo when you look at all of the single-family homes in Harris County, there\u2019s about a million \u2014 only about 1% are owned by the largest national investors,\u201d said Steve Sherman with the Kinder Institute. \u201cAbout nine companies own roughly 11,000 homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Researchers say that while the overall share is relatively small, those properties are more concentrated in certain suburban communities, including Cypress, Katy, Humble and Spring.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Even so, housing experts caution that affordability pressures extend far beyond corporate ownership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Kinder Institute\u2019s 2025 State of Housing in Harris County and Houston report found:<\/p>\n<p>Home prices and rents have increased faster than wages.<\/p>\n<p>More households are spending over 30% of their income on housing \u2014 the federal threshold for being considered cost-burdened.<\/p>\n<p>The gap between what residents earn and what they need to afford a home continues to widen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In other words, even if large investors are not purchasing most homes in Harris County, many families are still struggling to compete in a market shaped by higher interest rates, rising prices and limited inventory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cInterest rates are a lot higher than they were six years ago,\u201d Sherman said. \u201cIt was a really good time if you had enough money for a down payment when the pandemic was going on. If you missed that window of opportunity, it\u2019s a lot harder now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Housing advocates argue that limiting large-scale investors could ease competition in certain neighborhoods.
