{"id":181603,"date":"2026-02-26T18:01:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T18:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/181603\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T18:01:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T18:01:10","slug":"this-day-in-history-february-26","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/181603\/","title":{"rendered":"This Day in History, February 26"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"text | article-text\">AUSTIN, Texas (KWTX) &#8211; On February 26, 1888, the original \u201cgoddess of liberty\u201d statue was placed on top of the Texas Capitol building.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The goddess was created by welding together 80 separate pieces of zinc, before the 16-foot-tall statue was hoisted to the top of the dome.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">After years of upkeep and restoration, the original statue was eventually replaced by an aluminum replica in 1986.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">However, the original \u201cgoddess of liberty\u201d is still on display at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"copyright |\">Copyright 2026 KWTX.
