High atmospheric pressure over northern Mexico, combined with southwesterly flow, funneled in hot, dry air from Mexico to set the stage for the record-breaking heat.

Also, as that air traveled downhill off the higher terrain of Mexico and the Edwards Plateau, it underwent compressional heating, which is when sinking air is squeezed and warms as it descends. That additional warming, combined with dry weather and lots of sunshine, helped fuel the heat across South Texas.

High pressure will dominate our weather this weekend with more record heat likely, especially in the desert Southwest.
