LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – More than 300 people entered the doors before 10:30 a.m., at the Friends of the Library book sale, each with their own reason for showing up.

For Katie Hamilton, the event has become a family tradition. She brought relatives who made the drive from Midland specifically to browse the tables alongside her.

“It spoils me, I don’t want to pay retail most of the time now. But they’re so reasonably priced, great quality. You can find all types of books here. I love that the money stays here in Lubbock,” Hamilton said.

A few aisles away, 9-year-old Foster Hangkins had a clear mission — finding books about animals, building projects and documentaries.

“I just read these books because it gives me more information; that’s why I love reading about animals,” Hangkins said.

Christina Linder had a different purpose in mind. She arrived early searching for materials to support her sobriety group and personal development.

“It feels wonderful – sometimes 10 dollars for a big book is a lot of money. It’s really cool to get them the big book but these other tools as well. There’s all kinds of books for trauma and spirituality and bibles,” Linder said.

Books she selects go onto a shared bookcase available to group members seeking resources for healing, recovery and faith.

The sale features 50-cent paperbacks, $1 hardbacks, posters, CDs and vinyl records. Volunteer Coordinator Lillian Arzaghi says the variety keeps people coming back.

“There’s just something about having a real book and also we have books from every era of publication so if you want an old book, you can get an old book,” Arzaghi said.

The event is one of ten annual sales organized by Friends of the Library. Proceeds fund library programs and help connect community members with additional resources throughout the year.

The sale will be open to the public Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., shop until 3 p.m.
