Opened in 1961 by noted real estate agent and oil worker Angus G. Wynne, Jr., the park was originally envisioned as a destination that would overshadow Disneyland in sheer size alone.

Now over half-a-century later, Six Flags Over Texas remains part of one of the USA’s most celebrated theme park franchises, featuring world-class coasters, family fun, and iconic characters ranging from DC’s superheroes to the Looney Tunes—and, soon, its much-anticipated world record-breaking ride.

Six Flags Over Texas’ Tormenta Revs Up For A Record-Breaking Ride

The flagship attraction of Six Flags Over Texas’ new Spanish Village, Rancho de la Tormenta, is a coaster themed to Spain’s legendary Running of the Bulls. Entering beneath brilliantly colored banners, visitors will be surrounded by “jubilant Spanish music” and welcomed to join the celebration aboard coaster cars designed to reflect the traditional costumes worn by the runners.

However, once Tormenta takes off, riders will find themselves at the center of it all, facing the heart-racing excitement inspired by one of Spain’s most iconic cultural traditions.

Texas Six Flags Regional General Manager Jeffrey Siebert told TheTravel that the coaster is three-quarters through track installation. At 179 ft., Tormenta stands taller than France’s Arc de Triomphe (161 ft.) and Niagara Falls (110 ft.), and rises higher than the Great Sphinx of Giza (65 ft.) three times over. Meanwhile, the new attraction breaks six world records:

Tallest dive coaster: 309 ft. – nearly 31 stories

Highest 95-degree beyond-vertical drop: 285 ft.

Fastest dive coaster: 87 mph

Highest Immelmann inversion: 218 ft.

Tallest vertical coaster loop: 179 ft.

Longest dive coaster: 4,199 ft.

“After sunset, Tormenta will come alive in a way that transforms the horizon — creating a dramatic new presence that can be seen across Arlington and beyond,” Siebert told TheTravel.

Said to light up the Arlington skyline with an immersive nighttime display, Tormenta Rampaging Run stands as one of the most ambitious projects undertaken by Six Flags. And like participants in the Running of the Bulls, coaster enthusiasts will take excitement by the horns as they plunge 285 ft. in the ultimate display of courage and pride.

Tormenta Rampaging Run Gets Ready For Its Big Breakout Debut In 2026

Set to open by the summer 2026 season, Tormenta is impacting more than the Arlington skyline, but future theme park experiences by setting a new record-breaking standard. Besides coaster enthusiasts, it’s Jeffrey Siebert who is most excited about the new attraction and what it means for Texas’s iconic theme parks.

“Tormenta Rampaging Run isn’t just a new ride — it’s a defining moment for Six Flags Over Texas and for the entire state. This will be the largest and most ambitious attraction ever built in Texas, and when it opens by summer, guests won’t just feel the intensity — they’ll see it,” Siebert told TheTravel in a later comment.

Already, Siebert and the team at Six Flags are inviting guests to secure their passes ahead of the grand opening. With construction nearing completion, all eyes now turn to summer 2026, when Tormenta is ultimately unleashed.

In Addition To The Record-Breaking Tormenta Rampaging Run, Six Flags Over Texas Celebrates Its Historical 65th Anniversary

In the tradition of The New Texas Giant (which debuted in 2011 around the park’s 50th anniversary), Tormenta Rampaging Run is one of several attractions being spotlighted during Six Flags Over Texas’ 65th anniversary celebration. While the coaster is hyped as the headliner for the historic occasion, the park announced additional offerings as it puts the final touches on Tormenta.

“As we celebrate 65 years of thrilling fun at Six Flags Over Texas, we are honored to share a season that reflects both our history and our future,” said Six Flags Over Texas park manager Mark Boyer.

Featuring over 100 shows, rides, and attractions, the Arlington park is rolling out updates and enhancements to fan-favorite coasters such as Batman and Mr. Freeze. Meanwhile, guests can also explore a new museum highlighting the park’s 65-year history.

Additionally, among the new show offerings are Western Daze, a puppet show inspired by the spirit of the Old West; The Perondi’s Stunt Dog Experience, an animal act aimed at families; and the world-famous Gazillion Bubbles Show.

via Shutterstock

These additions are part of a multimillion-dollar investment intended to make 2026 a landmark year for Six Flags Over Texas and its waterpark, Hurricane Harbor.
