Greg Abbott said that the shooting would not \u201cdefine (Texas), nor will it shake the resolve of Texans,\u201d in a statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The shooter was identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, sources familiar with the case <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/national\/2026\/03\/01\/texas-bar-shooting-leaves-3-dead-and-14-wounded-as-fbi-investigates-possible-terrorism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/national\/2026\/03\/01\/texas-bar-shooting-leaves-3-dead-and-14-wounded-as-fbi-investigates-possible-terrorism\/\">told the Associated Press<\/a>. Diagne, originally from Senegal, came to the U.S. in 2006 and was a naturalized U.S. citizen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The FBI is investigating whether it was motivated by terrorism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere were indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism,\u201d said Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the FBI\u2019s San Antonio field office. \u201cAgain, it\u2019s still too early to make a determination on that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The downtown Austin shooting took place <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/politics\/2026\/02\/28\/attack-on-iran-texas-san-antonio-leaders-react-after-joint-us-israel-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/politics\/2026\/02\/28\/attack-on-iran-texas-san-antonio-leaders-react-after-joint-us-israel-strike\/\">one day after the U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Iran<\/a>. An AP source said the suspect in the shooting was wearing clothing that said \u201cproperty of Allah\u201d and had an Iranian flag design.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Abbott said the state would use \u201cdecisive and overwhelming force\u201d against anyone who seeks to use the conflict in the Middle East to threaten Texans or the state\u2019s critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">U.S. Rep. Greg Casar, D-Austin, said his office is in touch with local and federal law enforcement and called on those with information to contact the Austin Police Department.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Leaders from both sides of the aisle offered their condolences Sunday morning, including San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cLet\u2019s keep our neighbors to the north in our prayers,\u201d Jones said, \u201cthat those injured recover quickly and the families of the victims who were needlessly murdered are comforted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Jones and U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-San Antonio, also both called for solutions to resolve gun violence in America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cNo one should fear facing violence on a night out,\u201d Castro said. \u201cCongress must continue to work to end the scourge of gun violence in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin, called on congressmembers to pass House Resolution 6225, which he introduced last November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Also known as the PAUSE Act, H.R. 6225 would severely limit the ability for any visa to be issued until immigration laws reflect certain provisions listed in the resolution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Abbott said he directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to increase patrols in downtown Austin on Sunday, in addition to his directive from yesterday aiming to safeguard energy facilities, ports, and the southern border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">This story may be updated as KSAT receives more statements from other leaders. We have bolstered cybersecurity personnel and deployed unmanned aerial surveillance to monitor and protect critical infrastructure sites. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 ewwUYq\">\u201cI also directed the Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas National Guard to intensify patrols and surveillance.
