Runners are gathering in North Texas this weekend for the Cowtown Marathon<\/a> races, including a family with a deeply emotional and personal reason for showing up at the starting line.<\/p>\n

Scrolling through old memories, it\u2019s clear cousins Dottie Quisenberry and Eloise Peck, known as \u201cLulu,\u201d were inseparable \u2014 besties whose bond still feels close for those who loved her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe called her Lulu. She loved to swim. She always had a ton of energy. She\u2019s funny. She, like, never ever fought with anybody,\u201d said Dottie. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever I talk about her, she\u2019s right next to me. \u2018Pat, pat, pat,\u2019” Dottie said, tapping next to her. “I think that\u2019s where she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

The girls were both at Camp Mystic when a deadly flood swept through the Hill Country on July 4, 2025<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cDottie was rescued, but we were supposed to go get two girls,\u201d said Becca Quisenberry. \u201cBut we only came back with one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Family members said they continue to see reminders of Lulu, even in small moments.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see like, five different \u2018E\u2019s\u2019 in all different days in the clouds and they\u2019re literally shaped like \u2018E\u2019s,\u2019\u201d said Dottie.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first it was really hard, but it\u2019s never hard to talk about her or any of the girls because they were the magic,\u201d said Becca. \u201cYou can either let it eat you, or you can do something about it. And we\u2019re doing something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dottie and Becca are part of Team 27, a group running the Cowtown 5K on Saturday to support the Heaven’s 27 Foundation<\/a>, a nonprofit honoring the legacy of the 25 children and two counselors who died in the flooding.<\/p>\n

Dottie said she wants others \u2014 especially younger runners \u2014 to understand why it matters. <\/p>\n

\u201cI want them to know that we are doing this for charity and that it’s special to us and it should be special to them,\u201d said Dottie.<\/p>\n

As she prepares for the 5K, Dottie said she imagines Lulu beside her — joking, smiling and keeping the same spirit she always had. She said she hopes that kindness spreads from runner to runner.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause once I smile at somebody that wasnt smiling, they can smile at somebody else, which they just pass the smiles on,\u201d said Dottie.<\/p>\n

‘Team 27’ is expected to include dozens of runners in the Cowtown 5K.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s nice to put energy into something this positive and feel the love,\u201d said Becca.<\/p>\n
