HOUSTON \u2013 As RodeoHouston kicks off, hundreds of crew members work nearly around the clock inside NRG Stadium. Their mission: get a massive, high-tech stage ready for a different superstar every single night. <\/p>\n
This is the \u201cstar stage\u201d \u2014 the glowing, five-pointed platform that makes a grand entrance before some of Houston\u2019s biggest concerts of the year. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s nothing like it anywhere else\u201d <\/p>\n
The man in charge of making it all happen is Kyle Olsen, Chief of Show Operations for RodeoHouston.<\/p>\n
When asked if there\u2019s another stage like this anywhere in the world, Olsen is clear: \u201cThere\u2019s nothing put together like ours.\u201d <\/p>\n
He calls it \u201can incredible machine\u201d \u2014 and the numbers back that up. <\/p>\n
One of the most jaw-dropping stats: the weight. <\/p>\n
Olsen revealed the stage clocks in at 450,000 pounds. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe do it big,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The star-shaped platform has been in use since 2018, a future-focused upgrade Olsen said helped put RodeoHouston on the map in the live entertainment world. <\/p>\n
How does it move? People, lasers \u2014 and \u201ca little bit of magic\u201d <\/p>\n
With five star points that can move up and down and complex mechanics hidden underneath, this isn\u2019t a simple \u201cpush a button\u201d setup. <\/p>\n
When asked what actually moves the massive structure, Olsen credits both humans and tech: \u201cPeople and a little bit of magic.\u201d <\/p>\n
That \u201cmagic\u201d includes a laser-guided driving system. <\/p>\n
Olsen said the stage is actually on its own laser-guided navigation, ensuring it glides to the perfect center spot on the stadium floor every night. <\/p>\n
Built-to-order shows: Every night looks different <\/p>\n
No two concerts look the same. <\/p>\n
Each performance is customized to the artist, from the colors and lighting to the video content on the massive screens. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe color palette that they\u2019re using, if there\u2019s specific video elements that they want\u2026 every single night is something different,\u201d Olsen said. <\/p>\n
Behind the scenes, that means: <\/p>\n
A world-class touring production crew<\/p>\n
About 2,000 lights<\/p>\n
Nearly 12 million pixels of video boards <\/p>\n
All of it is synchronized to deliver a stadium-filling experience, whether it\u2019s a country star, pop act, or rock legend. <\/p>\n
When a concert stopped \u2014 but the team didn\u2019t<\/p>\n
The stage\u2019s complexity was on full display last year, when Journey was performing \u201cDon\u2019t Stop Believin\u2019\u201d at RodeoHouston. <\/p>\n
Mid-song, the concert came to an abrupt end after an electrical fire under the stage. <\/p>\n
As fans kept singing in the stands, crews underneath and around the stage were scrambling to troubleshoot and repair. <\/p>\n
\u201cHaving the type of team and the type of people we have, it was before midnight that we knew we were having a show the next night,\u201d Olsen said. <\/p>\n
They spent the entire night restringing cables and fixing the issues that caused the failure \u2014 determined not to let the breakdown cancel the next show. <\/p>\n
Work on the stage didn\u2019t stop when the rodeo season ended. <\/p>\n
Olsen said the team kept refining the system in the offseason to make sure that specific type of failure doesn\u2019t happen again. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat particular failure will never happen again,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
21 concerts ahead \u2014 and no time to slow down <\/p>\n
With 21 concerts lined up, the pressure \u2014 and the pace \u2014 are intense. <\/p>\n
Olsen said the nonstop work is already underway, and the star stage is fully ready for another season of big shows and bigger crowds. <\/p>\n
He sums up the scale of the operation with one unforgettable line: <\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a machine \u2014 it\u2019s one rocket booster away from going into space.\u201d<\/p>\n
