SAN ANTONIO \u2013 A San Antonio institution has served up chicken-fried steak for the final time. <\/p>\n
Good Time Charlie\u2019s, located at 2929 Broadway, announced its closure in a Thursday morning news release. <\/p>\n
In the release, the restaurant, which first opened in December 1979, said its last day of service was Wednesday. <\/p>\n
\u201cWhile the decision to close Good Time Charlie\u2019s marks the end of an era, it also signals the beginning of a new chapter for the neighborhood,\u201d the release stated. <\/p>\n
According to the restaurant, its land was sold to the DoSeum, which is located at 2800 Broadway. <\/p>\n
A spokesperson confirmed to KSAT on Thursday afternoon that Good Time Charlie\u2019s parking lot will now belong to the DoSeum. What\u2019s next for the now-vacant restaurant structure are not immediately clear. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe continually study the most promising potentials to accommodate our programs as they grow in the future,\u201d The DoSeum CEO Dan Menelly said in the release. \u201cWe\u2019re grateful to Good Time Charlie\u2019s for the generations of memories they\u2019ve created. They have been good neighbors and we understand and appreciate the city\u2019s deep affection for them and their delicious food.\u201d<\/p>\n
Millard Stetler, one of Good Time Charlie\u2019s co-founders, insisted that the restaurant\u2019s closure was unrelated to selling its land to the DoSeum. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe timing was right for us personally, and reaching this outcome was always our preferred goal,\u201d Stetler said in the release, in part. \u201cWe\u2019re proud of our legacy and excited for what\u2019s ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
The spokesperson also told KSAT that the land surrounding and including the Taco Cabana restaurant, located next door to Good Time Charlie\u2019s at 2908 Broadway, was also sold to the DoSeum. <\/p>\n
However, according to the spokesperson, the Taco Cabana will remain open and be leasing to the DoSeum. <\/p>\n
