\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe May 2 general election to select Roanoke City Council members for Ward 1, Ward 2 and Ward 3 was canceled at the Feb. 24 meeting<\/a> since only the incumbent candidates for each seat filed to run<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A special election to fill the vacancies for the unexpired terms for Ward 1 and Ward 2 will continue as scheduled on May 2.<\/p>\n

What happened?<\/p>\n

Incumbent Holly Gray was declared the council member for Ward 1, incumbent Brian Darby will continue as council member of Ward 2 and incumbent David Brundage will remain council member of Ward 3, per city documents.<\/p>\n

All three council members will serve a three-year term, according to city documents.<\/p>\n

Former Roanoke City Council members Bryan Moyers and Hogan Page stepped down<\/a> from City Council earlier this year, prompting<\/a> a special election to fill their seats.<\/p>\n

John Pullen, Victor Molaschi, Donald J. Glacy and Jeff Barksdale filed<\/a> for the Ward 1 seat and Jonathan Ackmann and Ernie Adams file for the Ward 2 vacancy.<\/p>\n

Roanoke is a home-ruled city with the city divided into three wards<\/a> with two council members serving each ward, according to the city charter. Only residents living in that ward may vote on the elected official for that area.<\/p>\n

Early voting for the May 2 special election will run from April 20-28.
