Incumbent U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia handily won Tuesday\u2019s Democratic primary race in the 29th Congressional District, despite the Houston district being redrawn by the state\u2019s Republican lawmakers last year. <\/p>\n

Garcia received 58.2% of the vote on Election Day, defeating Democratic challengers Jarvis Johnson, who received 35.7%, and Robert Slater, who received 6%, according to complete but unofficial results from the Texas Secretary of State\u2019s Office<\/a>. <\/p>\n

In a statement on social media<\/a> early Wednesday morning, Garcia said she is deeply grateful for the opportunity to continue representing the people of the 29th District. <\/p>\n

“This campaign was about standing up for working families, protecting Social Security and Medicare, investing in our neighborhoods, and making sure every voice is heard,” she said. \u201cI will continue to work every day to deliver results for the people of this district.”<\/p>\n

Speaking at an election night watch party Tuesday, Johnson thanked those who had helped him throughout his campaign. He is a former state representative and Houston City Council member who also has run for state senate<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“If I didn’t thank you, charge my head, not my heart, because I love every last one of you in here who gave money, who gave time, who gave energy, and certainly those who gave prayers,” he said. “This is simply another chapter, but there’s another chapter to come and this story is not ended yet and we will continue to do all the work that we need to do.”<\/p>\n

Garcia is Houston’s only Latina in Congress and has represented the 29th District since 2019. According to Houston Public Media’s previous reporting<\/a>, her district was one of several targeted by Republican state lawmakers during their 2025 mid-decade redistricting efforts. Much of the old 29th District’s Latino population was redrawn into the new 9th Congressional District. <\/p>\n
