A purchase doesn’t necessarily signal a store announcement is imminent. However, the company has been expanding at a breakneck pace since entering the Dallas-Fort Worth market in 2022.

In 2015, H-E-B bought 17 acres on the south side of East Bonds Ranch Road, next to U.S. 287. At the time, the corridor was largely undeveloped farmland.

In December, H-E-B purchased another 5 acres adjacent to the Bonds Ranch property from a family holding company, according to real estate records filed with the Tarrant County Clerk. H-E-B also filed an agreement with the property’s mineral rights lessee to assume control of the surface rights for the 5-acre tract.

This map shows the site of about 22 acres owned by H-E-B on the southeastern corner of East Bonds Ranch Road and U.S. 287 in far north Fort Worth.

The acquisition provides more frontage on East Bonds Ranch Road and brings the total acreage at the site to about 22. By comparison, the new Walsh H-E-B under construction in far west Fort Worth sits on 19 acres.

A message left for an H-E-B spokesperson was not immediately returned Thursday.

Development is booming all around the H-E-B property, including the 123,000-square-foot Kroger Marketplace that opened in October across the street. A new H-E-B would not improve the situation without substantial roadwork.

Kroger has put a positive spin on the traffic issues, telling the Star-Telegram last fall that it might benefit the new Bonds Ranch store.

“The traffic is definitely a plus for us because do you want to sit in traffic, or would you want to come in and shop at Kroger while you let the traffic die down a little bit?” John Votava, Kroger’s director of corporate affairs.

When asked about potentially having an H-E-B across the street, Votava didn’t comment directly. He would only say Kroger was pleased with its business growth and the growth of its customer base.

“We are committed to building on our success and continuing to delivery quality that Kroger shoppers trust and value that they love,” said Votava.

H-E-B’s Bonds Ranch property is only about 3 miles from its Alliance H-E-B, which was the company’s first store in Fort Worth when it opened with fanfare and throngs of shoppers in April 2024. Nearly two years later, the crowds haven’t seemed to die down. On weekends, the parking lot can be nearly full.

Perhaps not coincidentally, a Kroger Marketplace is right across the street.

This story was originally published March 5, 2026 at 5:33 PM.

                Matt Adams

                    Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Matt Adams is a news reporter covering Fort Worth, Tarrant County and surrounding areas.
