In 2022, Ben Affleck<\/a> became so fixated on AI in film production<\/a> that he quietly launched his own film tech company, InterPositive.<\/p>\n

Netflix<\/a> brought the startup into the spotlight Thursday morning as it announced the full acquisition of the company. InterPositive\u2019s mission, which focuses on developing \u201cAI-powered tools built by and for filmmakers\u201d and using new technology to \u201cprotect and expand creative choice,\u201d will now be exclusive to Netflix. In a news release, the streamer said it is \u201cinvesting in creator-led innovation that keeps filmmakers at the center of the process.\u201d<\/p>\n

Netflix said it will bring on InterPostive\u2019s entire team and keep Affleck as a senior advisor as part of the acquisition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe InterPositive team is joining Netflix because of our shared belief that innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them,\u201d Elizabeth Stone, Netflix\u2019s chief product and technology officer, said. \u201cInterPositive\u2019s impressive technology is purpose-built for filmmakers and showrunners to work with tools that naturally support their creative visions and how they want to bring them to life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before founding his company, Affleck \u2014 best known for films like 2012\u2019s \u201cArgo,\u201d \u201cPearl Harbor\u201d (2001), and \u201cBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice\u201d (2016) \u2014 said he noticed all the ways AI technology was falling short in the production space. <\/p>\n

When launching InterPositive, the 53-year-old actor said he wanted to keep \u201cstorytelling human.\u201d So he partnered with a group of engineers to develop a proprietary dataset on a controlled soundstage, similar to a full-fledged production, and began building its first AI model.<\/p>\n

He said the model is \u201ctrained to understand visual logic and editorial consistency, while preserving cinematic rules under real-world production challenges like missing shots, background replacements or incorrect lighting,\u201d all while \u201ckeeping creative decisions in the hands of artists.\u201d<\/p>\n

Affleck\u2019s AI deal with Netflix comes at a time when much of Hollywood is critical of the technology, and skeptical of the larger companies in the space.<\/p>\n

SAG-AFTRA<\/a>, the actor\u2019s union, of which Affleck is a member, is negotiating a new contract with major studios and proposing new AI provisions<\/a> designed to protect human talent.
