That became even more of a foregone conclusion when the team placed forward Tyler Seguin, who went down with an ACL injury in December, on season-ending injury reserve last week, freeing up $9.85 million in cap space.

As expected, the Stars made good on trade speculation this week by shipping off a trio of upcoming draft picks in exchange for some much-needed gritty forward depth and size on the blue line.

On Thursday, the Stars announced that they acquired 30-year-old forward Michael Bunting from the Nashville Predators in exchange for the Seattle Kraken’s 2026 third round draft pick, which the Stars received in exchange for sending forward Mason Marchment to the Pacific Northwest back in June. Bunting, who has now been traded at the NHL trade deadline three times in three years, has posted 31 points (13 goals and 18 assists) in 61 games for the Preds this season. Over the course of his career, Bunting has registered 250 points (108 goals, 142 assists) in 405 games played between Arizona, Toronto, Carolina, Pittsburgh and Nashville.

He will be a free agent when his contract expires at the end of this season.

“Michael is a tremendous addition to our roster,” Stars General Manager Jim Nill said of Bunting in a press release confirming the move. “His goal scoring ability mixed with physicality makes him extremely tough to play against. We are looking forward to seeing him on the ice in Dallas.”

Just a day prior, the team announced it had acquired 36-year-old defenseman Tyler Myers from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for the Stars’ own second-round pick in 2027 and own fourth-round pick in 2029. In a press release announcing the move, the Stars also revealed that the Canucks will retain 50 percent of the remaining money left on Myers’ three-year contract, which runs through the 2026-2027 season. Myers, who ranks seventh among active defenseman in games played, has earned 403 points (100 goals and 303 assists) in 1,123 regular season games played across a career previously spent in Winnipeg, Buffalo and Vancouver.

Myers, the 12th overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft, played alongside Stars captain Jamie Benn back in the day — but that was back when the two were juniors. In 2009, Benn and Myers were teammates on the 2009 WHL Championship-winning Kelowna Rockets and they also played together while representing Canada in the 2009 World Junior Championships. Though a dual citizen, Myers was — notably — born in Houston. When he takes the ice for the first time, Myers will become the first Texas-born player to suit up for the Stars in a regular season game.

The Plano-raised NHL forward Stefan Noesen, who currently plays forward for the New Jersey Devils, has suited up a Stars jersey before, joining the team for the preseason in 2019. But he would be cut from the team before the start of the regular season, leaving Myers the honor of becoming the first Texas-born player to play meaningful on-ice minutes for a Texas NHL franchise.

It’s possible the Stars could still make more moves ahead of the NHL’s trade deadline at 2 p.m. Central Time on Friday.

Either way, the new additions to the team — who bring some much-needed depth and grit to a roster that’s looking to steel itself up for an upcoming playoff run — are joining the Stars during a stretch in which they’re the unquestioned hottest team in the league. The Stars have rattled off 10 straight wins over a stretch that dates back to January — before the league went on its Winter Olympics hiatus.

On Friday, the Stars take that momentum into a home matchup with the rival Colorado Avalanche — their Central Division foe, who also happens to be only team in the NHL with a better record than Dallas.

The Stars shipped off a trio of draft picks in exchange for some much-needed depth, grit and size…

[9
102,104,103
0":"post-192751","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-dallas","8":"tag-dallas","9":"tag-dallas-headlines","10":"tag-dallas-news
["GET
