Nathan Johnson and former Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski have both advanced to a runoff election in the Democratic primary for Texas attorney general.<\/p>\n<p>Texans took to the polls for the March 3 primary, the nation\u2019s first big contest of the 2026 midterm elections, and over two million\u00a0people voted in the Democratic primary.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson or Jaworski will either take on U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin, or state Sen. Mayes Middleton, R-Galveston, in the general election, as the Republican primary race also heads to a runoff.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas attorney general race has been the focus of national attention since current Attorney General Ken Paxton announced he would run for U.S. Senate, leaving Texas without an incumbent candidate for attorney general for the first time in over a decade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Johnson or Jaworski\u00a0will assuredly be the underdog heading into the general election in November, as the attorney general\u2019s office has been solidly conservative for several years. No Democrat has won statewide office in Texas since 1994.<\/p>\n<p>The runoff elections are scheduled for May 26.<\/p>\n<p>Election Day for the 2026 midterms is Nov. 3, with early voting beginning on Oct. 19.
