A safety by trade, he mans the nickelback role, bringing a linebacker\u2019s mentality in a defensive back\u2019s frame to much success.<\/p>\n<p>Pitre received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/76913\/jalen-pitre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">three-year, $39 million contract extension<\/a> in April 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The Texans have adjusted Pitre\u2019s deal, clearing up some much-needed breathing room under the salary cap for this offseason.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c#Texans Jalen Pitre full breakdown of restructure: $7.785M of base salary converted to signing bonus, salary cap lowered to $5.683M, new salary $1.215M, added 2029, 2030 voidable years for proration,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AaronWilson_NFL\/status\/2030219163608748499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">KPRC 2\u2019s Aaron Wilson reported<\/a> on X on March 7. \u201cMakes same scheduled $9.5M 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Wilson noted Pitre will earn $9.5 million in 2027 and 2028, with $14.5 million cap hits in both seasons. Similarly, he will earn $20 million in 2029 and 2030, both \u201cvoidable,\u201d with $21.5 million cap hits.<\/p>\n<p>There was seemingly even more wiggle room that could have been created.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConverting CB Jalen Pitre\u2019s 2026 salary into signing bonus (plus void years) can free up $6.7M of cap space,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/news\/_\/id\/3228\/2026-financials-houston-texans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Spotrac\u2019s Michael Ginnitti wrote<\/a> in January.<\/p>\n<p>Texans Continue Re-Working DB Room Deals<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5808133\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5808133\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2253040034-e1772727857814.jpg\" alt=\"Derek Stingley Jr. Houston Texans\" width=\"780\" height=\"438\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5808133\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5808133\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2253040034-e1772727857814.jpg\" alt=\"Derek Stingley Jr. Houston Texans\" width=\"780\" height=\"438\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5808133\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GettyDerek Stingley Jr. #24 of the Houston Texans returns a interception for a touchdown against the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/atlanta-falcons\/\" title=\"Atlanta Falcons\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"182616\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta Falcons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pitre\u2019s deal comes as the Texans did the same with All-Pro cornerback <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/derek-stingley\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Derek Stingley Jr.<\/a>, who is signed through 2029 on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spotrac.com\/nfl\/player\/_\/id\/76848\/derek-stingley-jr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">three-year, $90 million pact<\/a>. Wilson updated the details of Stingley\u2019s restructure, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c#Texans Derek Stingley Jr. full breakdown of restructure: 2026: $20.38M of salary converted to signing bonus, salary down to $1.215M, salary cap down to $10.791M, makes same $22.095M cash,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AaronWilson_NFL\/status\/2030220132581101865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Wilson said<\/a> in his post on the standout CB. \u201c2030 voidable year added: $40M salary, $44.076M salary cap<\/p>\n<p>\u201c$126.595M over length of deal, $30M APY, $89.026M gtd, $48.026M full gtd, $41M inj gtd.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stingley has a $20 million salary in 2027 and $21 million in 2028 and 2029. His cap hits in those seasons are $29.6 million, $30.6 million, and $31.6 million.<\/p>\n<p>Like Pitre, and even more so given his durability over the past two seasons, Stingley is a key part of the Texans\u2019 secondary and defense as a whole. He is a two-time Pro Bowler, a two-time First Team All-Pro, and one of the NFL\u2019s best players, not just on the Texans\u2019 roster.<\/p>\n<p>Texans Still Have Secondary Questions<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5411768\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5411768\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2170852548-e1751768207316.jpg\" alt=\"Kamari Lassiter, Calen Bullock, Houston Texans\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5411768\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5411768\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2170852548-e1751768207316.jpg\" alt=\"Kamari Lassiter, Calen Bullock, Houston Texans\" width=\"780\" height=\"439\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5411768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GettyKamari Lassiter #4 and Calen Bullock #21 of the Houston Texans react after an interception against the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/indianapolis-colts\/\" title=\"Indianapolis Colts\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"182617\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Indianapolis Colts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Texans entered the offseason with roster questions at safety, where Pitre can line up next to fellow starter <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/calen-bullock\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Calen Bullock<\/a>, but leaves a soft spot when he moves down into his primary nickelback role.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/jaylin-smith\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jaylin Smith<\/a>, a third-round pick by the Texans in 2025, could fill the nickel role, allowing Pitre to move back.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Texans\u2019 questions do not end there.<\/p>\n<p>They will soon face extension decisions on Bullock and corner <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/kamari-lassiter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kamari Lassiter<\/a>, both of whom were 2024 draft picks.
