Among the\u00a0countries\u00a0competing\u00a0in Houston\u00a0are Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal \u2014 three of\u00a0the\u00a0region\u2019s\u00a0top\u00a0international\u00a0trading\u00a0partners.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Strong trade, business\u00a0investment\u00a0and cultural ties have linked these markets for years, and the World Cup\u00a0provides\u00a0a unique opportunity to deepen those relationships while\u00a0showcasing\u00a0Houston as a global hub for business,\u00a0travel\u00a0and international collaboration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Netherlands is Houston\u2019s largest international trading partner. Trade between the two reached\u00a0$32.7 billion\u00a0in 2025, more than four times the\u00a0$7.8 billion\u00a0recorded in 2016, according to the Greater Houston\u00a0Partnership\u2019s Houston Facts. The Houston\u2013Galveston Customs District is also the No. 1 U.S. gateway for trade with the Netherlands.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>31\u00a0Houston companies\u00a0operate\u00a0subsidiaries in the Netherlands, while 41 Dutch firms have operations in the Houston area. Manufacturing accounts for more than 30 percent of Dutch business activity in the region. KLM and United Airlines\u00a0operate\u00a014 weekly nonstop flights between Houston and Amsterdam, connecting the two global hubs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Germany is Houston\u2019s sixth-largest international trading partner. Trade between the two totaled\u00a0$16.1 billion\u00a0in 2025. The Houston-Galveston Customs District\u00a0is\u00a0also\u00a0the\u00a0fifth\u00a0busiest\u00a0gateway for U.S.-Germany trade.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>German companies have a strong footprint in the Houston area.\u00a088\u00a0German firms\u00a0operate\u00a0145 locations\u00a0across Houston, making Germany the fourth-largest source of foreign-owned businesses in the region.\u00a0Manufacturing accounts for\u00a0nearly\u00a056 percent\u00a0of those operations. Companies with a Houston presence include\u00a0Siemens,\u00a0BASF\u00a0and Brenntag.\u00a0Meanwhile,\u00a034 Houston companies have 68\u00a0subsidiaries\u00a0in Germany.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Direct flights help support\u00a0business\u00a0and travel between the two markets. Lufthansa and United Airlines\u00a0operate\u00a020 weekly nonstop flights from Houston to Frankfurt and Munich.\u00a0Houston and Leipzig, Germany have also been sister cities since 1992, a long-standing partnership focused on fostering cultural and economic cooperation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Portugal\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While smaller in scale, Houston\u2019s relationship with Portugal continues to grow.\u00a0Trade between the two totaled $830 million in 2025, up from just $219 million in 2016.
