Houston firefighters found a man hanging from a rope and on fire at a homeless encampment on Houston’s northeast side late Thursday night.<\/p>\n

“It seems very unlikely (that the death was a suicide),” Houston Police Department\u00a0Lt. A. Khan told OnScene TV.<\/p>\n

Firefighters were dispatched to the Loop 610 underpass near Kirkpatrick around 10 p.m. Thursday after Union Pacific employees reported a brush fire,\u00a0Khan said.<\/p>\n

The scene is adjacent to north-south railroad tracks.<\/p>\n

The man is thought to be between 40 and 50 years old, according to a news release<\/a> from the Houston Police Department. An identity was not released pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences and notification of family members.<\/p>\n

Firefighters put out the fire and discovered the body of the hanging man who was dead, Khan said.<\/p>\n

An autopsy is being conducted by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences<\/a> to determine his cause of death.<\/p>\n

At the scene, Khan told OnScene TV the details surrounding the man’s death were not known and no witnesses had come forward.<\/p>\n

Houston Police Department continues to investigate the incident and those with information should call HPD’s Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crimestoppers at 713-222-TIPS.<\/p>\n
