HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — An hourslong standoff has come to an end after a suspect surrendered outside a home in west Harris County on Monday afternoon, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.<\/p>\n
HCSO said deputies attempted to pull over a suspect’s vehicle after the driver didn’t stop at a stop sign around 11 a.m.<\/p>\n
HCSO said that the suspect parked his vehicle on Mission Hill Drive near Highway 6 South, and then barricaded himself inside the residence. The sheriff’s office said it deployed its SWAT team, K-9 team, and drone units to the scene.<\/p>\n
HCSO said the man’s mother arrived at the home after he locked himself in. Viewer video sent to ABC13 shows law enforcement pulling a woman away from the property.<\/p>\n
Law enforcement negotiators could be heard over the loudspeaker calling out to someone named Tony. At one point, a recording of a woman who investigators said was the man’s mother started playing on a loop. Asking for ‘Tony’ to come out so law enforcement wouldn’t have to break down the doors or windows.<\/p>\n
After the suspect refused to comply for several hours, law enforcement was able to take the suspect by deploying a type of tear gas, known as CS gas, according to HCSO.<\/p>\n
The sheriff’s office said that the suspect, described as a 30-year-old Black man, was taken into custody and faces a felony evading charge.<\/p>\n
ABC13 asked if the show of force could be justified over a minor traffic violation.<\/p>\n
“We don’t know why any person in a traffic situation is refusing to stop and evade us, so we took that into consideration, as well as far as the resources we deploy. It seems like a minor offense; however, we don’t know what this individual was wanted for,” HCSO Major Earl Dean said.<\/p>\n
Law enforcement is working to identify the suspect at this time and to determine if he has any criminal history.<\/p>\n
