{"id":198918,"date":"2026-03-10T22:33:06","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T22:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/198918\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T22:33:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T22:33:06","slug":"spring-branch-homeowner-warns-clogged-drainage-ditch-could-cause-flooding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/198918\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring Branch homeowner warns clogged drainage ditch could cause flooding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">HOUSTON \u2013 A drainage path behind several homes along Rollingwood Drive in Houston\u2019s Spring Branch neighborhood is now filled with debris, fallen trees, damaged fencing and standing water, and residents say the lack of maintenance could lead to flooding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Homeowner Laura McBee says the ditch is designed to carry stormwater away from the neighborhood and drain into a culvert near Long Point Road. But she says the area hasn\u2019t been properly maintained in years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s supposed to drain out the culvert here at Longpoint,\u201d McBee said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">According to McBee, debris has piled up throughout the easement, blocking water from flowing properly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThere\u2019s debris everywhere. There\u2019s trees down. There is trash that has been thrown over the fencing. There are sections of fencing that are down, and it blocks off the runoff for the easement to drain properly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Rising water levels during heavy rain<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McBee says when heavy rain hits, water levels rise quickly. She showed emails she says she\u2019s sent to the city asking for help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cYou can see the debris line with all of the leaves where the water has literally come up to the street level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McBee says the city has only cleaned the ditch once in the past 12 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cOne time, and it was about three or four years ago,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Standing water brings mosquitoes and wildlife<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The standing water has also created additional concerns for neighbors, including mosquitoes and wildlife.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe have terrible mosquito problems back here. There\u2019s snakes, there are all sorts of wildlife and critters that are living back here,\u201d McBee said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She added that the problem is not isolated to her street.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis is a serious, serious problem and it isn\u2019t just our street that this is happening to. I have seen this in other parts of Spring Branch as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>City council office says it\u2019s working to address the issue<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In a phone call, Houston City Councilwoman Amy Peck said her office is aware of the issue and is working to address it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cAnytime that any of our ditches are overgrown, it\u2019s absolutely a concern and it needs to be taken care of,\u201d Peck said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe have asked Public Works to expedite maintenance on this and are willing to use council district service funds \u2014 anything that we can do to get this maintained as quickly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Homeowner says the fix can\u2019t wait<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">With standing water from recent rains already approaching fence level and more rain expected this week, McBee worries the situation could quickly worsen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI just literally pulled a baby water moccasin out of the pool less than a week ago,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">McBee says the solution is simple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThey need to come out and do this yesterday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">She also questions why the issue hasn\u2019t been addressed sooner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe all pay taxes, and I want to know where my tax money is going because clearly it\u2019s not going to this issue,\u201d McBee said.<\/p>\n<p>What happens if flooding occurs?<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">If flooding were to occur, homeowners would likely be responsible for damage to their own property.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In many cases, standard homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage unless the homeowner has a separate flood insurance policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Insurance companies can sometimes try to recover costs from a city or government agency through a legal process known as subrogation.
