Did you know that March 10th is Mario Day?

Okay, this may be one of the goofiest “holidays” ever — but I’m absolutely here for it. And honestly, it feels like something Lubbock would totally embrace, because Mario was a huge part of a lot of our childhoods.

Of course, we’re talking about Mario from Super Mario — the iconic Nintendo character who has been jumping across our screens for decades.

So why March 10th?

Well, the abbreviation Mar10 kind of looks like the word “Mario” if you squint just a little. Yes, it’s a little cheesy… but it’s also pretty fun.

There may never have been a video game character as universally loved as Mario. It didn’t matter if you were a hardcore gamer or someone who just picked up a controller occasionally — chances are you spent at least a little time guiding Mario through a world full of blocks, coins, and pipes.

Personally, I can’t even begin to count the hours I spent jumping on blocks, collecting coins, and diving down those mysterious green pipes.

Mario has appeared in dozens of games over the years — sometimes in his familiar side-scrolling adventures, and other times in completely different kinds of games. Along with the classic platformers we all know, there was the wildly popular Mario Kart, the puzzle-style Dr. Mario, and a long list of other titles that helped turn him into one of the most recognizable characters in entertainment.
