{"id":19937,"date":"2025-10-24T22:35:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T22:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/19937\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T22:35:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T22:35:18","slug":"fire-station-5-reopens-for-service-in-plano-after-12m-renovation-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/19937\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire Station 5 reopens for service in Plano after $12M renovation project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\tPlano\u2019s Fire Station 5 has reopened for service following a major renovation project that doubled its size and modernized the station\u2019s facilities.<\/p>\n<p>How we got here<\/p>\n<p>Fire Station 5 first opened in 1983 and is located just west of the intersection of Park Boulevard and Preston Road.<\/p>\n<p>The $12 million <a href=\"https:\/\/content.civicplus.com\/api\/assets\/56665416-23cf-4abe-a7b4-0b0cbef50deb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">renovation<\/a> of the building was supported by the 2021 bond referendum, which designated $9 million towards the project originally, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/content.civicplus.com\/api\/assets\/56665416-23cf-4abe-a7b4-0b0cbef50deb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city documents<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The renovation increased the building from 7,200 to 14,000 square feet, allowing for additional space to house emergency vehicles and equipment, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/content.civicplus.com\/api\/assets\/2f75714f-33c0-44a2-98d4-2e40313988c0?cache=1800\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a> from the city.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the station\u2019s living area has been renovated with additional beds, which are individual rooms that can be synced to the fire department\u2019s dispatch assignment system.<\/p>\n<p>Zooming out<\/p>\n<p>Plano City Council recently <a href=\"https:\/\/editions.communityimpact.com\/view\/1049208012\/8\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved<\/a> a contract at its Sept. 16 meeting with the Plano Firefighters\u2019 Association that will allow firefighters to work 24 hours on duty followed by 72 hours off\u2014a shift from the current 24 hours on, 48 hours off schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Plano Fire-Rescue is the first all-paid fire department in Texas to adopt the \u201c24\/72\u201d shift schedule.<\/p>\n<p>Once fully implemented, the new schedule will reduce firefighters\u2019 average work week from 56 hours to 42 hours.<\/p>\n<p>What they\u2019re saying<\/p>\n<p>Plano Fire Chief Chris Biggerstaff said adding space for hazmat team equipment storage was one reason the station was put on the 2021 bond referendum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to respond as a team when you\u2019re scattered all over the city,\u201d Biggerstaff said. \u201cWhen you look at it, it\u2019s basically a brand new station.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biggerstaff said the department and city officials are working to take care of firefighters \u201cfrom every angle.\u201d The individual rest areas aim to improve sleep deprivation effects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[If a] call comes in tonight for Engine Five and Med Five, Truck 5 doesn\u2019t get woken up, so that\u2019s a game changer whenever you\u2019re trying to get as much rest as you possibly can,\u201d Biggerstaff said. \u201cWhen you see the call volume increasing all the time, &#8230;
