LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A non-profit organization is working to restore the historic Garza Theatre<\/a> in Post, with plans to reopen the building as a venue to offer free arts programming for the surrounding rural community.<\/p>\n

Perky Palette<\/a>, led by Angela Dixon, purchased the theatre from the city in 2024<\/a>, after it sat vacant for more than a decade. The organization has since signed with a contractor and completed some architectural drawings for the project.<\/p>\n

Dixon\u2019s husband, Jesse, says the renovation will include gutting portions of the interior while preserving key structural elements, with a goal of returning the building to its original Art Deco design.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd we are going to redesign the front of the building and utilize the front shops. And then we will move forward with fixing the roof and the rest of the building,\u201d Angela Dixon said.<\/p>\n

The theatre\u2019s history dates to 1916. Jesse says roughly 4,000 bricks in the building bear someone\u2019s signature from previous performances.<\/p>\n

The total estimated cost of the renovation is $2 million. Perky Palette has received a $2,800 grant from the Garza County Endowment Fund and a $2,500 grant from Poka Lambro.<\/p>\n

Poka Lambro presented that check in front of the theater Tuesday morning. It\u2019s part of the company\u2019s program celebrating its 75 years in business by donating $7,500 per quarter to non-profits in its service area south of Lubbock.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust going through the area, this is the exact kind of thing that we like to support, where on its own, it wouldn\u2019t be able to come up and running. But as we do it, as others donate money, you can actually start to see the progress,\u201d said Matt Snowden, a representative with Poka Lambro.<\/p>\n

Dixon said she hopes additional businesses and foundations will contribute to the effort<\/a>, to help give her nonprofit a home to serve others.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started Perky Palette, it wasn\u2019t just about art, but it was about what art brings to everyone. It brings community, it brings memories, it brings togetherness and through fixing this building up, we\u2019ll be able to do that all throughout the community with multiple programs,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
