{"id":201578,"date":"2026-03-12T16:25:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-12T16:25:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/201578\/"},"modified":"2026-03-12T16:25:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T16:25:12","slug":"camp-east-montana-ice-detention-camp-to-remain-open-under-new-operator-report-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/201578\/","title":{"rendered":"Camp East Montana ICE detention camp to remain open under new operator, report says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Ayden Runnels and Lomi Kriel \/ The Texas Tribune<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is terminating its $1.2 billion contract for Camp East Montana, a hastily constructed immigration detention facility in El Paso that has been experiencing a measles outbreak, but will remain open, according to reports from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2026\/03\/11\/fort-bliss-detention-center-contractor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Washington Post.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A document was distributed to ICE staff, the Post reports, indicating the agency was drafting a letter to terminate the facility\u2019s contract at an unspecified date. The Post originally reported that the contract termination signaled the facility would close, but later corrected its reporting on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The facility\u2019s contract with Acquisition Logistics LLC was set to expire on Sept. 30, 2027, but was eventually terminated, according to the Post. A spokesperson with the company did not respond to an immediate request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>A separate contract was awarded to Amentum Services Inc. on Wednesday to provide housing, medical care and transportation for Camp East Montana, according to records posted to a U.S. General Services Administration website.<\/p>\n<p>News of the potential closure of the facility located on the Fort Bliss U.S. Army base prompted immediate response from <a href=\"https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2026\/02\/26\/camp-east-montana-ice-detention-center-el-paso-rep-escobar-letter-shutdown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso<\/a>, who called the camp the \u201cepitome of fraud, waste, [and] abuse\u201d after the Post\u2019s original report. Escobar has led calls to close the facility over reports of inadequate medical care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Trump administration has used El Paso as ground zero for its sick, twisted immigration enforcement policies for years, and Camp East Montana is no different,\u201d Escobar said in a statement. \u201cOur community must remain vigilant and committed to the continued fight while rejoicing that this dark chapter is over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security confirmed in a statement that the agency was reviewing the facility\u2019s contract, but that no decision had been made about its extension or termination. Spokespeople for ICE and DHS did not immediately respond to a follow-up question on whether the contract review was scheduled or triggered by some other factor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDHS undergoes rigorous audits and inspections of our facilities to ensure they are meeting our high standards,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2026\/02\/06\/el-paso-texas-dhs-buys-warehouses-ice-mega-immigration-detention-center-clint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">RELATED: DHS buys El Paso warehouses for $123 million ICE mega detention center as deportation capacity expands nationwide<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Camp East Montana has been mired in controversy since it opened in August as part of President Donald Trump\u2019s national effort to arrest and deport large numbers of undocumented immigrants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In January, the death of Geraldo Lunas Campos, a 55-year-old Cuban detainee, at the camp was ruled a homicide. ICE initially said Campos\u2019 death was due to medical distress then later attributed it to a \u201cspontaneous use of force\u201d to \u201cprevent him from harming himself.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2025\/12\/08\/fort-bliss-east-montana-ice-detention-camp-el-paso-texas-aclu-letter-third-country-deportations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">READ MORE: ACLU: ICE detainees at Camp East Montana beaten, threatened with illegal removal to Mexico<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Campos\u2019 death was the second of three at Camp East Montana in a six-week period beginning in mid-December, and the first homicide ruling for the death of an ICE detainee linked to staff in at least 15 years, according to experts. The three who died at the camp represent half of the six deaths in ICE custody in Texas since mid-December.<\/p>\n<p>At least 14 cases of measles have been detected at the camp and 112 people were being isolated as of Tuesday. The outbreak follows two cases of tuberculosis and several cases of COVID-19 reported in January.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2026\/02\/26\/measles-el-paso-texas-camp-east-montana-ice-detention-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">SEE ALSO: 17 measles cases reported in El Paso, including 13 at ICE Camp East Montana<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The camp\u2019s population has lowered to about 1,500 detainees, roughly half of its population in January, according to a document obtained by the Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration seeks to open additional ICE facilities in warehouses across Texas and the country to handle a rapidly increasing detainee population.
