Following a high-profile inspection of the Dilley detention facility in South Texas earlier this week, a delegation of House Democrats joined San Antonio leaders at City Hall to call for the closure of the center located an hour southwest of San Antonio. <\/p>\n

While national headlines focused on the release of two teenage musicians from the facility<\/a>, lawmakers returned with a broader report on the conditions facing hundreds of others.<\/p>\n

In this audio report, U.S. Reps. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., and Katherine Clark, D-Mass., describe a system in \u201cdespair,\u201d citing instances of pregnant women and young children lacking basic medical attention. <\/p>\n

U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) has called for the total closure of the facility, which he refers to as a \u201ctrailer prison.\u201d The visit underscored a growing push for oversight as the Department of Homeland Security looks to expand detention footprints<\/a> in the region.<\/p>\n
