Arlington\u2019s rapid growth and expanding development opportunities across North Texas took center stage on Tuesday during the 2026 Real Estate Symposium at The University of Texas at Arlington.<\/p>\n

Hosted by the Ryan-Reilly Center for Urban Land Utilization in the College of Business, the annual event brought together developers,\u00a0economists\u00a0and business leaders to discuss economic trends, regional\u00a0development\u00a0and the future of real estate across the Dallas-Fort Worth region.<\/p>\n

Dr. Sriram Villupuram, professor of finance and director of the Ryan-Reilly Center, said hosting the symposium is a benefit for both the College and attendees.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe symposium brings together developers, brokers, investors, lenders, policymakers and industry associations, which helps the College of Business strengthen partnerships with industry and build relationships with regional business leaders,\u201d Villupuram said. \u201cFor attendees, it provides high-value\u00a0networking\u00a0 while\u00a0also offering access to academic expertise, including market trend forecasts and economic outlooks that provide deeper insight into the real estate market.\u201d<\/p>\n

The theme of this\u00a0year\u2019s symposium was \u201cThe Emerging\u00a0Westoplex,\u201d\u00a0a\u00a0region\u00a0which Villupuram said \u201cholds tremendous potential to drive the DFW metro\u00a0area’s\u00a0growth trajectory over the next decade, especially with the emergence of UTA West.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marty\u00a0Wieder, executive director of the Arlington Economic Development Corporation, said Arlington\u2019s continued growth is helping position the region for that expansion, highlighting\u00a0the role of the Arlington Economic Development Corporation in attracting new investment and redevelopment projects.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe continue to see numbers that make people go, \u2018What\u2019s\u00a0going on in Arlington, Texas?\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0got to find\u00a0out,\u2019\u201d\u00a0Wieder\u00a0said, predicting the city\u2019s population will surpass\u00a0400,000 residents\u00a0this year.<\/p>\n

Founded in 2015, the Arlington EDC focuses on recruiting new companies, supporting business\u00a0expansion\u00a0and advancing redevelopment across the city.\u00a0Wieder\u00a0noted that Arlington\u2019s location in the Metroplex\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0allow for much new\u00a0development,\u00a0and\u00a0focus\u00a0should beon redeveloping current\u00a0structures\u00a0and lots.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0grow, but we can raise the bar with what we\u2019ve got,\u201d\u00a0Wieder\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Recent efforts have supported projects ranging from corporate headquarters and mixed-use developments to international investment initiatives. The organization helped bring the United Football League\u2019s corporate headquarters to Arlington and recently celebrated the opening of the National Medal of Honor Museum.Wieder\u00a0said one of the strategic goals of the EDC is the elevation of Arlington\u2019s positioning in the region to\u00a0attract a larger share of high-wage, high-impact growth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to see more UTA students choose to stay and live here,\u201d Wieder said.<\/p>\n

Development momentum is also expected to accelerate west of Fort Worth with the planned UTA West campus, which\u00a0speakers on the New Developments and Growth\u00a0Opportunities\u00a0panel\u00a0said could serve as a catalyst for long-term growth.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith any mixed use\u00a0project\u00a0you need an anchor, and I think UTA West is a great anchor,\u201d said Landry Burdine, designated broker for Land Advisors in Dallas-Fort Worth. \u201cThere’s\u00a0going to\u00a0be enough demand and growth on the west side of town for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panelists said new development around the campus will need to support academic spaces while also incorporating retail,\u00a0dining\u00a0and housing to accommodate a growing population of students and residents.<\/p>\n

\u201cWestern Fort Worth is a true blank canvas that is getting significant investment from UTA,\u201d Burdine said. \u201cThe thing that excites me about it….is that\u00a0its\u00a0controlled by a few people that have a great vision for it, and\u00a0its\u00a0a unique\u00a0opportunity\u00a0in Fort Worth and the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

The symposium also included a macroeconomic outlook from Villupuram, who discussed economic factors influencing development across the region, including employment trends and housing affordability. In Tarrant County, affordability has declined significantly, with speakers noting that for every three buyers who qualified for housing loans 15 years ago, only one qualifies today.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The symposium concluded with remarks from College of Business alum Sam\u00a0Mahrouq, founder,\u00a0chairman\u00a0and CEO of MEI Inc., who discussed redevelopment along Division Street and the vision behind his new boutique hotel project inspired by Arlington\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

The project, the Caravan Hotel, draws inspiration from the original Caravan Court motor hotel that once\u00a0operated\u00a0along Division Street and served travelers driving through Arlington during the mid-20th century.<\/p>\n

Mahrouq\u00a0said the project was designed to celebrate Arlington\u2019s automotive heritage and his longtime community ties. Design elements throughout the hotel reflect that inspiration, including headboards made from wood resembling a car dashboard and lighting fixtures designed to look like headlights.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I wanted from the project was to celebrate Arlington, truthfully,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted\u00a0to re-celebrate the history of Arlington. This street, Division Street, has been good to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

If the conversations throughout the symposium were any\u00a0indication, the\u00a0Westoplex\u00a0may soon become one of the Metroplex\u2019s most closely watched development corridors.<\/p>\n
