{"id":207225,"date":"2026-03-16T20:03:40","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T20:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/207225\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T20:03:40","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T20:03:40","slug":"kyle-kirkwood-wins-inaugural-indycar-grand-prix-of-arlington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/207225\/","title":{"rendered":"Kyle Kirkwood wins inaugural IndyCar Grand Prix of Arlington"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ARLINGTON<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/Drivers\/Kyle-Kirkwood\">Kyle Kirkwood<\/a> passed four-time <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/sports\/spt-columns-blogs\/mac-engel\/article315040872.html\">IndyCar champion<\/a> \u00c0lex Palou in the race\u2019s dwindling laps and never let go of the lead as he earned his first victory of the season and sixth of his career in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/sports\/nascar-auto-racing\/article315062344.html\">inaugural Java House Grand Prix of Arlington<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Kirkwood and his Andretti Global teammates <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indycar.com\/results\/ntt-indycar-series\/2026\/java-house-grand-prix-of-arlington\/combined-qualifications\">took three of the top four spots<\/a>. Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing was second, followed by Will Power and pole-sitter Marcus Ericsson.<\/p>\n<p>Kirkwood, who took over the series points lead through three races, said his move with 15 of the 70 laps left came in a \u201cdire straits situation\u201d on the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.star-telegram.com\/sports\/nascar-auto-racing\/article315029217.html\">2.7-mile street course<\/a> in the Arlington entertainment district around Globe Life Field and AT&amp;T Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, this is probably the only place I can pass him, and &#8230; I can surprise him,\u201d Kirkwood said. \u201cSo there\u2019s some urgency, but at the same time, we were a lot quicker than him. And he\u2019s someone that\u2019s very trustworthy to race against, and if you do some of those late lunges, you can trust that he\u2019s going to not drive you to the wall like maybe some other drivers will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kirkwood had some trouble in pit lane throughout the race and had to keep his composure despite the setbacks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had the pace to overcome it, so I wasn\u2019t worried,\u201d he said. \u201cI wanted to keep [the pit crew] calm, not get them fired up, because we still had three stops to do. Of course, we had issues. We didn\u2019t need to look back and see exactly what was happening on the rear right, but it seemed like there was an issue with the tire coming off and the tire going on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been one of the fastest on pit lane. I think we were the fastest of the three stops at Phoenix. So we have a fast pit crew. I\u2019ve got a lot of confidence in them. Bob Booth                                                                            Special to the Star-Telegram                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>Kirkwood came into the race in second place in the IndyCar standings behind Josef Newgarden as he aims for his first championship after taking fourth place in 2025. He\u2019s the real deal, man,\u201d Power said. \u201cHe won in every single [discipline] from go-karting all the way up. He\u2019s won every single championship. So this guy is very good, very good, incredible. But he doesn\u2019t do it just through natural ability. He works hard. Bob Booth                                                                            Special to the Star-Telegram                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree races in, I don\u2019t want to focus too much on the championship,\u201d Kirkwood said. \u201cI want to focus on the next race in front of us and just maximizing our performance. There\u2019s a lot of work to do. Of course, we want to be the biggest threat; every driver does. We\u2019re currently the biggest threat to him and the entire rest of the field. Just looked like a big event,\u201d Power said. \u201cThis is setting a new standard of what our events should look like.<\/p>\n<p>Palou said: \u201cMy expectations were high, but this has exceeded by 10 times this event. &#8230; Obviously, there\u2019s always stuff that you can improve. There\u2019s bumps that you can avoid having, there\u2019s small stuff that you can improve year by year, but this is by far the best street course race that I\u2019ve been part of, and it\u2019s really fun. It\u2019s really fun to see so many people in the stands. The energy was incredible, and I cannot wait to be back here next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Affectionately called the \u201cking of the streets\u201d on the Fox broadcast, Kingwood has claimed five of his six victories in street races. Bob Booth                                                                            Special to the Star-Telegram                                                                                        <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredible to race in such a central location to two of the biggest sports teams in the world, right?\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s been an incredible event. This event was done right. The track was built properly, with the fencing, the walls. The branding looked good and looked clean.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked exactly how a premier motor sports race should look like at a street course, right? And just the venue in general. &#8230; I can see this being one of our marquee events outside of the [Indianapolis] 500 in a very short period of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No official attendance figures were available Sunday.
