{"id":212022,"date":"2026-03-19T22:01:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T22:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/212022\/"},"modified":"2026-03-19T22:01:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-19T22:01:07","slug":"tarrant-fort-worth-leaders-seek-to-remove-all-recognition-of-cesar-chavez-after-abuse-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/212022\/","title":{"rendered":"Tarrant, Fort Worth leaders seek to remove all recognition of Cesar Chavez after abuse allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tarrant County and Fort Worth leaders are the latest seeking to remove all recognition of Cesar Chavez after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/18\/us\/cesar-chavez-sexual-abuse-allegations-ufw.html\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a New York Times story<\/a> revealed sexual abuse allegations from several women against the civil rights icon.<\/p>\n<p>Tarrant County Judge Tim O&#8217;Hare <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TarrantCoJudge\/status\/2034405185200521346\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> it would be &#8220;completely and totally inappropriate&#8221; for the county to recognize <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tarrantcountytx.gov\/en\/calendar\/cesar-chavez-day.html\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">March 31 as Cesar Chavez Day<\/a> and should end the holiday immediately.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Hare said his office is looking for legal options to do so without calling a special meeting with county commissioners, but is prepared to call one, \u201cif necessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From targeting minors to forcing himself on his co-founder Dolores Huerta twice, impregnating her twice, these claims are horrific,&#8221; O&#8217;Hare said. &#8220;We should all pray for the victims involved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>County Commissioner Manny Ramirez also said in a statement he would no longer honor or celebrate Chavez in any way.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the first and only Latino ever elected to the Tarrant County Commissioners Court, and grandson to migrant farm workers, I remain fully committed to honoring the enduring contributions of Hispanic Americans to our nation, hard work, resilience, and positive impacts on our communities and country,&#8221; Ramirez said.<\/p>\n<p>KERA News reached out to commissioners Alisa Simmons, Matt Krause, and Roderick Miles, Jr. and will update this story with any response.<\/p>\n<p>Fort Worth also <a href=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/2026\/03\/19\/cesar-chavezs-name-removed-across-fort-worth-following-sex-abuse-allegations\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">removed street toppers<\/a> on Northwest and Northeast 28th Street honoring Chavez, Mayor Pro Tem Carlos Flores said during a press conference Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sexual misconduct is something that should not be tolerated,&#8221; Flores said. &#8220;And it doesn&#8217;t matter who it pertains to. Whether it&#8217;s an important person or legacy, accountability matters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Allegations that Cesar Chavez sexually abused girls for years have led communities, organizations and local governments to reconsider holidays celebrating his legacy.<\/p>\n<p>Some of those allegations include multiple underage girls and Dolores Huerta, another labor organizer that worked closely with Chavez. She said he sexually abused her twice, leading to two pregnancies.<\/p>\n<p>The Cesar Chavez &amp; Dolores Huerta Committee of Tarrant County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SiSePuedeCommitteeofTarrantCounty\/posts\/pfbid036y4DjiyqS7n3hLoiKPq6e2jxqpnrjYhf6ph8Jo3EVn4ueLGibC7RKnDSY8WkAPitl?rdid=zUSJwXegnGIzbdQ0\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">announced Wednesday <\/a>it would be changing its name to the \u00a1S\u00ed Se Puede! Committee of Tarrant County and no longer host its annual traditional Annual March for Justice.<\/p>\n<p>The group said it will instead host a &#8220;No Kings, ICE Out&#8221; event March 28 to protest President Trump&#8217;s increased deportation efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We take these allegations seriously and will take time to process, reflect, and determine all of our next steps,&#8221; the statement read. &#8220;We hope that, as an organization, we can create a safe space and serve as a resource for the community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other events, holidays and celebrations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keranews.org\/news\/2026-03-18\/painful-for-many-in-our-community-dfw-reacts-to-allegations-cesar-chavez-sexually-abused-girls\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">across North Texas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/texas\/2026\/03\/18\/546501\/texas-cesar-chavez-day-allegations-greg-abbott\/\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the state<\/a> have been also been canceled in the wake of the abuse claims.<\/p>\n<p>Penelope Rivera is KERA&#8217;s Tarrant County Accountability Reporter.
