After having just one scholarship player on the roster when he was named the new head coach of Texas A&M basketball, Bucky McMillan led his squad to a 63-50 victory over Saint Mary’s in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on Thursday night.<\/p>\n
Texas A&M’s press defense was the story of the night, as the Aggies<\/a> forced 18 turnovers and did not trail from the first buzzer to the final. After struggling to find a rhythm inside the paint throughout the season, McMillan’s unit secured 31 rebounds against the most elite rebounding team in college basketball in the win.<\/p>\n Graduate forward Rashaun Agee led the team with 22 points and nine rebounds in an outstanding performance against Saint Mary’s in the first round of March Madness. While Texas A&M was picked to finish 13th in the SEC during the preseason, this team proved how legit it can be when playing at its best on Thursday night.<\/p>\n Consistent shooting, elite rebounding and physicality inside the paint were keys entering the round of 64 matchup against the Gaels. The Aggies succeeded on every level against a hard-nosed, physical Saint Mary’s squad to advance in the NCAA Tournament in McMillan’s first year as the head coach of the program.<\/p>\n Against the 13th-tallest program in the country, Agee and the Aggies dominated. What took former Aggie head coach Buzz Williams five years to accomplish, McMillan has done in one year. Texas A&M shot 44% from the field and 35% from 3-point range, while forcing 16 turnovers. Now, the Maroon and White will face the winner of Houston-Idaho for the opportunity to reach the Sweet 16.<\/p>\n Aggies lead by 13 points with 3:32 left<\/p>\n Texas A&M is three minutes from reaching the round of 32 for the third consecutive season. Aggies have possession after the timeout.<\/p>\n Texas A&M leads Saint Mary’s, 54-42, with 7:24 remaining<\/p>\n Agee’s 3-pointer gives him 17 in the contest, as the Aggies remain in front with time dwindling.<\/p>\n Gaels are battling back, but Aggies still hold a 49-33 lead with 12:58 remaining<\/p>\n Agee and Dominguez have combined for 25 points in the contest so far, as Texas A&M holds a commanding 18-point lead.<\/p>\n Texas A&M leads 44-26 with 15:45 remaining in the second half<\/p>\n Saint Mary’s continues to struggle against Texas A&M’s press, while the Aggies are hitting 49% of shots from the field. The Aggies have forced 11 turnovers in the contest.<\/p>\n Pop Isaac’s 3-pointer and a layup from Ali Dibba give the Aggies a 16-point lead in the opening minutes of the second half<\/p>\n The Maroon and White picked up right where they left off from a successful first half, nailing a 3-pointer and a layup to extend the lead, 42-26, in the second half.<\/p>\n HALF: Texas A&M 37 | Saint Mary’s 26<\/p>\n The Aggies forced 11 turnovers in the first half to lead the Gaels by 11 entering the second half.
