{"id":212950,"date":"2026-03-20T14:22:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-20T14:22:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/212950\/"},"modified":"2026-03-20T14:22:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-20T14:22:09","slug":"austin-isd-to-stop-celebrating-cesar-chavez-on-march-student-holiday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/212950\/","title":{"rendered":"Austin ISD to stop celebrating Cesar Chavez on March student holiday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Austin Independent School District will no longer honor Cesar\u00a0Chavez when students and staff have a holiday March 31 after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/18\/us\/cesar-chavez-sexual-abuse-allegations-ufw.html?unlocked_article_code=1.UFA.MY4Z.OU8Q4PBm_pjS&amp;smid=url-share\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a New York Times investigation<\/a> revealed allegations that the civil rights and labor leader\u00a0sexually abused women and children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we hold space for these difficult accounts, we remain committed to honoring the foundational impact of the labor leaders and civil rights activists who have shaped our nation,\u201d Superintendent Matias Segura said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austinisd.org\/announcements\/2026\/03\/19\/update-regarding-district-events-and-march-31-holiday-en-espanol\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a Thursday statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Austin ISD has honored both labor leaders with a March 31 student and staff holiday for several years.<\/p>\n<p>In the upcoming weeks, Austin ISD administrators plan to reflect and consider what the allegations mean for the district, Segura said.
