\n\tActor Judy Greer<\/a> and journalist and TV host Kara Swisher<\/a> went right for it as soon as they sat down.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe pair took on AI fears, maturing on screen and assessing how the dawn of streaming has changed Hollywood\u2019s traditional compensation models during a conversation held at the SHE Media<\/a> Co-lab space at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas on March 15.<\/p>\n

\n\tGreer was at the festival as part of the rollout for the indie drama \u201cChili Finger,\u201d<\/a> a true-crime tale revolving around a scam plot gone wrong. She stars opposite Sean Astin, Bryan Cranston and others. Greer described the jobs picture in Hollywood as \u201cscary\u201d for people in the early stages of their careers.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn the dawn of all the streaming television, we\u2019ve already lost a lot of money. We don\u2019t get those residuals anymore. People who relied on those for their health insurance, they don\u2019t have access to that anymore. And so that\u2019s a big, huge change that we\u2019re trying to figure out,\u201d Greer said. \u201cThere\u2019s so many more jobs, but it feels like no one\u2019s working, and now people can\u2019t get their insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGreer, known for her character turns on \u201cTwo and a Half Men,\u201d \u201cArrested Development\u201d and a host of other TV series and movies, told Swisher that getting older as an actress has been creatively fulfilling. Swisher is a veteran journalist and author and now a TV personality. She is host of the docu-series \u201cKara Swisher Wants to Live Forever,\u201d on the science and understanding of aging, which bows April 11 on CNN.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been so happy with the way things have been going for me. The roles I\u2019m getting offered are so much more layered and interesting, and so I have loved this section of my life,\u201d Greer said. \u201cMoving forward, I do tend to see all these older actors, male actors, playing these super-angry villains and stuff. And I would like to see some women playing those roles \u2014 being like \u2018Retribution!\u2019 I think it would be interesting. We would do it in a lot smarter way,\u201d Greer said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cOne of the things that has been freeing as I\u2019ve aged is, I don\u2019t have to adhere to a certain look anymore. I feel that is why the roles are becoming so interesting to me. Even myself \u2014 I\u2019m personally not as worried about how I look and being pretty in a movie. I don\u2019t care anymore,\u201d Greer said.<\/p>\n

\n\tSwisher pressed Greer on the concerns about making a living as a performer in the age of AI.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPersonally, I\u2019m still a bit sheltered from the really scary parts, because I am recognizable. My voice is recognizable. I haven\u2019t had to be scanned [for potential AI reproductions], things like that,\u201d Greer said. \u201cPeople at my level and above, it\u2019s really our duty to fight for the middle class of what I do. Because people who are background artists, people who are day players \u2014 they\u2019re the ones that I think are really going to get super-fucked.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSwisher admitted that she has conflicting feelings about how to handle AI\u2019s rapid advance. Greer agreed.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIf we can\u2019t kill this thing, and I don\u2019t know if we should, how can we use the superpower for good and not evil? Is there something that we can use this to elevate our art and to elevate artists in the way that the iPhone gave a medium to young filmmakers, young people and young artists. Is there a way to utilize the superpower to help creatives?\u201d Greer asked.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe conversation touched on a host of other topics. It ended on a positive note as Swisher asked Greer to leave the audience with a solid piece of advice. Greer didn\u2019t hesitate with her answer.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI make my bed every morning,\u201d she declared. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s so fucking boring and basic, but I make my bed every morning, and it makes me feel so together. When I start my day, when everything is falling apart and the world feels like it\u2019s falling apart, I have a made bed. It just feels like there is something that is fucking controlled and beautiful and neat and tidy,\u201d Greer said. \u201cMake your bed. I honestly believe in that. Make your bed.\u201d<\/p>\n
