Nearly two dozen consecutive favorites won to open the 2026 NCAA Tournament, but that streak ended Saturday night when No. 11 seed Texas knocked off No. 3 seed Gonzaga 74-68. For the second straight year, the lone double-digit seed in the Sweet 16 comes from the SEC.

Last season, No. 10 seed Arkansas reached the Sweet 16 after eliminating Kansas and St. John’s. Texas followed a similar path, beginning in Dayton in the First Four before earning its spot in the second weekend for the first time since 2023.

The Longhorns have now won three straight games — over NC State, BYU and Gonzaga — to advance. It’s been one of the toughest routes possible, but Texas is through in Year 1 under coach Sean Miller.

Miller becomes the 10th coach to take three different programs to the Sweet 16. He previously led Arizona there five times and Xavier three times. Texas will face either No. 7 seed Miami or No. 2 seed Purdue on Thursday in San Jose.

With the loss, Gonzaga will miss the Sweet 16 for a second consecutive season after making nine straight appearances prior. Coach Mark Few remains the winningest coach in NCAA Tournament history without a national title, with 45 career wins.

Duke bounces back vs. TCU

After it was pushed to the brink by No. 16 seed Siena earlier in the week, Duke looked every bit the No. 1 overall seed against TCU. The Blue Devils advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time under coach Jon Scheyer and will face either No. 4 seed Kansas or No. 5 seed St. John’s.

Duke star Cameron Boozer finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds despite a quiet first half. He attempted just one field goal in the opening 20 minutes before scoring 17 of his 19 points after halftime. Duke pulled away with a 37-14 run after the game was tied at 44 with 13:43 remaining and finished with a 23-10 advantage in free-throw attempts.

Louisville’s season ends in disappointment

Louisville’s season came to a close with a 77-69 loss to No. 3 seed Michigan State. While winning an NCAA Tournament game earlier in the week was notable, expectations were higher for a program of this caliber. The Cardinals won 27 games last season with what was considered a less talented roster, making this outcome a letdown.

Star guard Mikel Brown Jr. did not play in the NCAA Tournament after being ruled out for the weekend. A projected top-10 pick, Brown showed flashes of his potential but appeared in just 21 games, including missing the final six with a back injury. Louisville’s heavy investment in the transfer portal did not yield the expected return, setting up a pivotal offseason for coach Pat Kelsey.

Nebraska wins the game of the day

Nebraska’s Braden Frager delivered the game-winning layup with 2.2 seconds remaining. Safe to say, he will never have to buy a drink or meal in Lincoln, Nebraska, for the rest of his life. Vanderbilt star Tyler Tanner almost had his Gordon Hayward moment as time expired with a half-court shot that bounced in and out of the rim. Instead, it’s Nebraska that is advancing to the Sweet 16 for the first time in program history.
