The city announced Barton Springs Pool will reopen on Saturday, March 21. City of Austin staff and contractors finished work on the skimmer bypass project this week.<\/p>\n

The city revealed the development in a Thursday press release<\/a>. According to the release, residents can purchase tickets for the pool using the free ATXSwims app as well as onsite at ticket kiosks or counter purchases.<\/p>\n

Barton Springs closed<\/a> the week of Feb. 23 for the repairs and was initially expected to reopen last Friday. However, the project, which involved removal and mitigation of a decommissioned 1940s skimmer bypass, took longer than expected.<\/p>\n

The skimmer bypass infrastructure was designed to address creek flow from Barton Creek. After decades of flood events, the decommissioned bypass began to present safety and environmental concerns. Austin Watershed Protection found it was at risk of collapsing, which could harm not only people but the sensitive salamander habitat at the pool.<\/p>\n

Throughout the project, Austin Watershed Protection monitored environmental protections for salamander habitat. The changes made during the construction will help support a more stable environment in the habitat.<\/p>\n

During the closure, Austin Parks and Recreation completed additional deferred maintenance projects within the pool area in preparation for the spring season, including grass aeration and seeding, gravel removal, repainting and refinishing signage and guard stands, servicing the diving board, and clearing algae from upstream areas.<\/p>\n

The project did not include any improvements to the pool itself.<\/p>\n
