Garland Animal Services<\/a> removed 64 cats from “deplorable” conditions, officials said, The largest animal rescue in the city\u2019s history.<\/p>\nGarland Animal Services said the cats were taken from a home March 18 after authorities received a tip from an outside agency about possible animal neglect.<\/p>\n
When officers arrived, the homeowner initially told them there were about 20 cats inside. Instead, investigators found 64.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were living in deplorable conditions,\u201d said Art Munoz, director of Garland Animal Services.<\/p>\n
Officials said the home was covered in feces and urine, with debris and trash throughout. Many of the cats were malnourished and suffering from illness, including upper respiratory infections.<\/p>\n
Due to the conditions inside the home, responders used protective gear while removing the animals.<\/p>\n
The cats have since been split among multiple shelters and nonprofit organizations across North Texas to receive medical treatment and care.<\/p>\n
Sixteen remain at the Garland Animal Shelter, where staff are providing daily medication.<\/p>\n
Munoz said cases involving animal abuse are not uncommon, but the number of animals in this case makes it stand out.<\/p>\n
Each year, Garland Animal Services handles more than 100 animals involved in abuse or neglect situations, he said.<\/p>\n
No charges have been filed against the homeowner, and the investigation remains ongoing. Officials are urging the public to report suspected animal abuse.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you see something, report it,\u201d Munoz said. \u201cWe can handle a lot of these cases before they get out of hand.\u201d<\/p>\n
Authorities say the focus now is on helping the cats recover.
