They won their lone matchup with the Red Raiders in 2025 15-5 in eight innings (April 8).<\/p>\n<p>UNM has won four of the last five meetings between the two teams in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p>BROWN KEEPS WINNING<br \/>\u2022 \u00a0With New Mexico\u2019s 15-9 start, Head Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/staff\/tod-brown\" title=\"Tod Brown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tod Brown<\/a> is now above .500 win percentage in his tenure in Albuquerque with a 120-116 record.<br \/>\u2022 \u00a0The Lobos have increased their winning percentage from the year before in each of the last three seasons (21-33 in 2022, 26-25 in 2023, 28-26 in 2024, 30-23 in 2025).<\/p>\n<p>LAST WEEKEND (VS. ABILENE CHRISTIAN, 3\/20-22)<br \/>\u2022 \u00a0New Mexico went 1-2 over the weekend series against Abilene Christian, hitting .303 as a team with 33 hits, 23 runs and four homers while posting a 9.00 team ERA across the three games.<br \/>\u2022 \u00a0The Lobos produced consistent offense throughout the series, finishing with a .303\/.397\/.495 slash line and 13 extra-base hits. RBI singles from <a href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/player\/luke-wiseman-2\" title=\"Luke Mansy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Luke Mansy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/player\/khalil-walker\" title=\"Khalil Walker\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Khalil Walker<\/a> along with a sacrifice fly from <a href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/player\/anthony-diaz\" title=\"Anthony Diaz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Anthony Diaz<\/a> highlighted the inning as the Lobos took a 5-3 lead they would not relinquish.<\/p>\n<p>In the previous 203 meetings between the two programs since 1940, the Lobos had only won 16 times in Tucson. UNM\u2019s relief corps was dominant overall, combining for 7 1\/3 innings of scoreless baseball to close it out and stifle the Wildcats&#8217; hopes of a comeback.<\/p>\n<p>RHP <a href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/player\/talor-grubbs\" title=\"Talor Grubbs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Talor Grubbs<\/a> secured the win with a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the season.<\/p>\n<p>CASTILLO NAMED TO NATIONAL PITCHER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST<br \/>After a shutdown start to the season on the mound in 2026, New Mexico RHP\u00a0<a title=\"Ryan Castillo\" href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/player\/ryan-castillo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Castillo<\/a>\u00a0has been named to the College Baseball Foundation National Pitcher of the Year Watch List, the organization announced Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The junior righty is one of just 142 pitchers to make the cut for the list, which represents 26 different conferences and reflect the top mound performers to this point of the 2026 season.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo has taken a major step forward on the mound in 2026, going 3\u20131 with a 2.78 ERA over four starts while striking out 28 batters in 22.2 innings and holding opponents to a .171 batting average. He struck out a career-high 10 batters in six innings vs. Tarleton State, improving his average to 11.12 K\/9 innings.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been quite the breakout season for the junior and Los Lunas native, who posted a 11.95 ERA in 2024 and an 8.65 ERA in 2025 while allowing opponents to hit .402 and .354, respectively. In 2026, Castillo has nearly cut his career ERA in half this season while lowering his WHIP to 0.97 and recording 28 strikeouts after totaling 61 over his first two seasons combined.<\/p>\n<p>WASLEFSKY NAMED TO BROOKS WALLACE AWARD WATCH LIST<br \/>New Mexico\u2019s\u00a0<a title=\"Karsen Waslefsky\" href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/player\/karsen-waslefsky\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Karsen Waslefsky<\/a>\u00a0has been named to the Watch List for the College Baseball Foundation\u2019s Brooks Wallace Award, the organization announced Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>The award honors the nation&#8217;s top shortstop and will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.<\/p>\n<p>Waslefsky, a senior for the 12-1 Lobos, was one of 100 shortstops selected to the Watch List.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"838\" data-end=\"1314\"><a href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/player\/garrett-rede\" title=\"GARRETT REDE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GARRETT REDE<\/a> THE HERO<br \/>\u2022 With the Lobos unblemished start on the line in Game 2 of Saturday&#8217;s doubleheader, it was grad senior and Rio Rancho native <a href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/sports\/baseball\/roster\/player\/garrett-rede\" title=\"Garrett Rede\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Garrett Rede<\/a> who delivered when it mattered most. With the Lobos trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Rede came up with an RBI double that brought in two runs and retook the lead. When the Tommies responded with an equalizer in the top of the ninth, he produced again, hitting a game-winning single with the bases loaded to walk it off and secure the series win.<br \/>\u2022 He earned the start in left field on Sunday as a reward and kept rolling, blasting a two-run homer that gave the Lobos a lead they wouldn&#8217;t relinquish the rest of the way as they completed the sweep.<\/p>\n<p>2026 OUTLOOK<br \/>\u2022 After another season in which the Lobos improved their winning percentage and made the Mountain West Tournament with one of their best offensive seasons in recent memory, New Mexico looks to be a threat to win the Mountain West in its final season with Fresno State, San Diego State and Washington State in the conference.<br \/>\u2022 Heading into Head Coach <a href=\"https:\/\/golobos.com\/staff\/tod-brown\" title=\"Tod Brown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tod Brown<\/a>\u2019s fifth year at the helm, the Lobos return three players that batted above .300 last season in starting roles and a total of nine upperclassmen pitching returners \u2013 eight of which with eight or more appearances last season \u2013 that combined for 217 innings of work.\u00a0<br \/>\u2022 The Lobos\u2019 2026 roster is its most experienced in Brown\u2019s tenure, with 18 seniors &#8212; six of which being graduate seniors &#8212; and 29 of 36 players being upperclassmen.<\/p>\n<p>TOP BATTING TEAM IN THE NATION IN 2025<br \/>New Mexico led the entirety of NCAA D-I in team batting average (.337) and doubles per game (2.79) at the conclusion of the 2026 season, capping off a historic year that saw the Lobos rank among the Top 20 teams in the nation in seven different offensive categories.
