On Feb. 27,\u00a0upcoming\u00a0metalcore\u00a0band\u00a0Waves in April\u00a0performed its first tour stop\u00a0at the Rockhouse Bar & Grill in El Paso.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They traveled from New Braunfels, Texas, joining Taken by Tides for their \u201cBack to Hell Tour.\u201d Other opening acts included Honey Vrosa, CZYK and Glorious. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Waves in April consists of four members, Dierks Canada, lead screamer and plays both the bass and guitar; Willy Canada, the drummer; Lukas Wilson, who plays guitar and bass while providing screams and backup vocals; and Elle Gorman, the band\u2019s lead singer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not expect this to be our first stop,\u201d Dierks\u00a0Canada\u00a0said. \u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0very\u00a0cool,\u00a0[and]\u00a0very far. This is the first time\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0been in El Paso.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The band\u00a0draws\u00a0inspiration\u00a0from\u00a0a wide\u00a0range\u00a0of subgenres within the\u00a0metalcore fanbase.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all\u00a0grew\u00a0up listening to Alice in Chains, pop punk music\u00a0and Slipknot,\u201d Wilson said.\u00a0\u201cI love Core, Hardcore,\u00a0Death Core too and all that. I just love that kind of history of the genre, and we all gravitated toward that sound, that headier sound,\u00a0and always just like the things that were just fun to play.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Gorman\u00a0finds her singing voice to range in\u00a0different styles, but metal is where her passion stays true\u00a0for\u00a0her.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to what I\u2019m singing, you could really put it in any genre,\u201d Gorman said. \u201cSometimes people tell me I sound western, like\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0from the seventies, it just depends. The sound of metal music is where my passion is, and so\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0where I am.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

During the performance,\u00a0Waves in April\u00a0played\u00a0a short setlist\u00a0that included\u00a0previously released songs\u00a0such as \u201cLying Figure,\u201d\u00a0\u201cUzumaki,\u201d\u00a0and a cover\u00a0of\u00a0Paramore\u2019s\u00a0\u201cDecode.\u201d They\u00a0closed the\u00a0set\u00a0with its\u00a0newly released single\u00a0\u201cNeverbloom\u201d\u00a0which\u00a0debuted\u00a0the same day as\u00a0the show.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The band members said the song marked an important moment in their collaboration as a group.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not the original singer for this band,\u201d Gorman said. \u201cI came into this about a year and a half ago at this\u00a0point, and\u00a0this was the first song that we collectively wrote together.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cNeverbloom\u00a0also comes from the truest space from us,\u201d Dierks\u00a0Canada\u00a0said. \u201cThere wasn\u2019t a song map, but we had the title, the chorus, and we just hammered it out and we\u2019re like, this is it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the first song that\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0released where I have writing credits,\u201d\u00a0Willy Canada\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

With\u00a0their song\u00a0\u201cNeverbloom,\u201d\u00a0finally\u00a0being\u00a0out, they also have\u00a0their\u00a0debut album in the works,\u00a0hoping\u00a0that it will be released this year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tLaying down the beat drummer Willy Canada and the rest of the band perform their new single \u201cNeverbloom\u201d on the same day of release. \t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a full album in the can,\u201d Dierks\u00a0Canada\u00a0said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to\u00a0release this year, probably\u00a0during the\u00a0summer.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Wilson explained what listeners can expect with the new album\u00a0and how this album has helped them\u00a0experiment but\u00a0also relive their\u00a0nostalgia\u00a0over the years.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think with this new album we have\u00a0coming\u00a0out, you\u2019re\u00a0going to\u00a0hear a lot of new sounds from us that aren\u2019t from before,\u201d Wilson said. \u201cYou can hear how we\u00a0formed\u00a0the album.\u00a0You can get a sense of the band. \u200aThis album has been written over the past six years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

While the album is in the works and is hoped to\u00a0be\u00a0released during\u00a0the summer, there is still a possibility that it\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0definite.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a promise,\u201d Gorman said. \u201cBut we are playing Red Rocks this\u00a0summer in July, and we\u2019re\u00a0going to\u00a0try to have it come out before that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The band\u00a0hopes\u00a0to reach\u00a0metalcore\u00a0listeners\u00a0who were fans\u00a0of the old metal scene,\u00a0drawing inspiration from\u00a0bands like\u00a0Motionless in White. Their goal\u00a0is to\u00a0modernize the classic style\u00a0and\u00a0bring it back\u00a0to a new generation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

When asked what new listeners could expect from them, the band said they had more than one answer.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you like the old scene, if you like the old\u00a0Crabcore\u00a0scene, you\u2019ll like us,\u201d Dierks\u00a0Canada\u00a0said. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to modernize classic metal core and just bring it\u00a0back but\u00a0also mix modern [metal] because we love both sides of the spectrum so much.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Waves in April\u00a0<\/a>will continue joining Taken by Tides on their \u201cBack to Hell Tour\u201d all throughout March.\u00a0<\/p>\n
