That T-shaped intersection near the 3G that leads into the Tom Thumb parking lot has been the site of many left-turn and rear-end crashes. There have been 44 wrecks there since 2021. The City’s presentation also reports that the absence of left-turn lanes on Gaston Avenue has led to delays and vehicles blocking through traffic in the left lane.

To remedy the issues, the following improvements were proposed, according to the presentation:

Adding dedicated left-turn lanes on Gaston Avenue and signals with a green arrow to allow turns
Upgrading the outdated signal technology for to make traffic flow more efficient
Updating pedestrian crossings with additional signal infrastructure and clearly marked crosswalks
Installing a new median to convert some driveways to right-in/right-out only

This project, funded by the 2017 bond program and the Dallas County Major Capital Improvement Program, is estimated at $2 million for right-of-way acquisitions, design and construction. The projected timeline includes finalizing the design scope this spring, completing the design between this summer and late spring of next year, and working on construction between winter/spring 2028 and late fall 2029. Of course, the schedule may change based on right-of-way acquisitions, permitting, utilities relocation and anything unforeseen. Another public meeting covering possible lane closures and restricted driveway access is expected to take place before construction starts, according to the presentation.

To share your two cents on this project, email Dallas transportation planner Kierra Williams at Kierra.Williams@dallas.gov by Friday, March 27.

I am a North Texas native with roots in Arlington and Benbrook, and I graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2018.
