EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — If springtime in El Paso has you sniffling and reaching for the tissues, you’re not alone — and it turns out your dog might be feeling the same way.

At the El Paso Humane Society, AJ shared that dogs can absolutely get allergies, especially as the area heads into a dusty season. Some breeds may be more prone to allergies than others, but AJ said it can really depend on the individual dog.

Just like people, dogs can show a range of allergy symptoms. AJ said pet owners might notice their dog rubbing its nose a lot, sneezing frequently, or developing a rash. Another big sign: chewing on their paws or scratching at them.

Because those symptoms can overlap with signs of illness, AJ said it’s important to check in with a veterinarian if anything seems off.

“Well, either one, you should talk with your vet,” AJ said.

AJ added that if a dog is sneezing, has a rash, or even has an upset stomach — whether it seems seasonal or there’s no clear pattern — it’s best to reach out to a vet to see what steps to take next.

There are also some simple ways to help manage allergy season at home. AJ said keeping dogs clean can make a difference, especially by wiping or cleaning their paws after they come back inside — a move that can also help keep the house cleaner and reduce allergens for people in the home, too. Frequent baths may also help, particularly for dogs dealing with dry skin or other skin issues.

For dogs with more severe allergies, AJ said there are special soaps available through a veterinarian, including options that may require a prescription. Overall, AJ said the goal is to keep dust and other irritants off your pet as much as possible.

The Humane Society also introduced Annie, a calm shepherd mix featured during this week’s visit.
