{"id":219987,"date":"2026-03-25T16:43:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T16:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/219987\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T16:43:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T16:43:17","slug":"corpus-christi-utility-worker-found-dead-in-manhole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/219987\/","title":{"rendered":"Corpus Christi utility worker found dead in manhole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Update, 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 25:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aeptexas.com\/company\/news\/view?releaseID=10829\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">AEP Texas has confirmed<\/a> that a utility worker whose body was recovered from a manhole in downtown Corpus Christi after an apparent electrocution on Tuesday, March 24, was one of their employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn\u00a0AEP Texas employee suffered fatal injuries Tuesday morning following an incident in downtown Corpus Christi,\u201d the electric company said in a statement. \u201cWe send our deepest condolences to the family of our employee and to our entire organization following this sad news,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>The Nueces County Medical Examiner&#8217;s Office confirmed to MySA that the man was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/the-utility-worker-who-died-of-apparent-electrocution-in-a-manhole-is-identified-as-an-aep-texas-employee\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">53-year-old Lee Wane<\/a>. His cause of death has yet to be determined and remains under investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Original story, Tuesday, March 24:<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Nueces County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office is investigating the cause of death of a utility worker whose body was recovered from a manhole in downtown <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/south-texas\/article\/three-rivers-texas-water-crisis-22092290.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Corpus Christi<\/a> on Tuesday, March 24.<\/p>\n<p>The incident left thousands without power as first responders worked to recover the body, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/downtown\/crews-working-to-pull-worker-trapped-in-manhole-in-downtown-corpus-christi\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">reporting by KRIS 6<\/a> and\u00a0KIII 3NEWS. The incident occurred at the 600 block of Mestina Street, not far from the Corpus Christi Cathedral. The Corpus Christi Fire Department responded to \u201creports of a possible electrical accident,\u201d 3NEWS reported.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At approximately 11:30am our crews were called to the 600 block of Mestina for possible electrocution,&#8221; Corpus Christi Fire Marshal Juan A. &#8220;Tony&#8221; Perez told MySA in an emailed statement, adding that about 27 firefighters responded to the scene.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Upon arrival our crews identified a confined space incident with a utility worker approximately 10ft. below ground level. Fire department personnel upgraded the response to a confined space rescue,&#8221; Perez said.<\/p>\n<p>Power was cut to the area as crews worked to recover the utility worker, whose identity has not been released. When first responders were able to reach the man, they discovered he was already deceased and proceeded to safely remove his body from the confined space. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kiiitv.com\/article\/news\/local\/utility-worker-found-dead-in-manhole-power-outage-reported-downtown-firefighters-say\/503-56e89fc7-ad5f-4b0d-9a5e-305f8f3002c1\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">3NEWS reports the utility worker<\/a> had been the only person in the manhole.<\/p>\n<p>The power outages affected several city departments, including police headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDue to power outages in the downtown area, all services out of Main Station are currently closed.
